Some of my family is from the high peaks region, so we went up there every summer. There is no comparison. When I worked at a remote camp out at Crosswinds lake here in AK the mosquitos would keep you up at night, you could hear them outside of the tent. Not to mention the white socks which are like blackflies on steroids.

Lol, Manitoba has the worst mosquitoes in the world. It's hard to breath without inhaling a bunch of them during Bear hunting.

Don't even hold a candle is right...where I live... good lord! Seriously, our school mascot is the no-see-um... you can't even breathe without inhaling 20 or so... it really puts a damper on Sept moose hunting and berry picking, and fishing, come to think of it... doing anything outside.
most painful biters though, I would have to go with the white socks

Lived in Iowa for years, mosquitos were bad but really were not that big of a deal BUT I fished southern Minn. for catfish and they were TERRIBLE. One product helped more then anything else I used and it was called Armour. Always picked it up at Shorty's bait shop in Kellogg Minn.

White sox are a nasty bug during moose season, but in the summer, the horse flies are unbearable during the heat of the day. They take chunks out of you and there is no bug dope on earth that deters them from doing it.

The bugs are the only thing I hate about Alaska. It's funny, the longer you live here, the more you get used to them.

That is funny. And your right. I remember them being a lot smaller in Montana.

Thing that stinks about the white sox is that they will crawl up your pant legs and sleeves and get you!
For mosquitos, I've been pretty darned impressed with those Thermacell things. They give you about a 10 foot circle that is pretty much bug free.....
I hate deet. The 100% Uncle bens stuff works good, but it will peel the skin off your ears after awhile...I like to put it all around my hat, that seems to help keep them out of my ears...

I got infected by a white sock bite in the early 80's while on my boat in Halibut cove. I was actually stuck in the lagoon with low tide and had to wait like 8 hours. The red lines started up my arms. The kind when your a kid you hear stories of when the line reaches your heart your toast. Made it in time. ;0)

I never apply bug spray to my skin. Just my clothing. Hat sweatshirt etc. Will fight them before I will rub that stuff on me. I like a bug net.
