Would there be any benafits to getting long's over coil's? I hear that the longs are easier to bed then coils. Are the longs strong enough to break through a crust in winter?

Longs bed easy, hold better and handle freezing conditions better than coils. They both have their good and bad points but you can't go wrong with longs for coyotes...

Bed chopped out and trap fit in.

A thin layer of peat, trap back in then covered with peat.

Finished with a little snow through a sifter with a couple sticks and a couple droppings for guiding.

That happens to be a trail set on a drag.

The only thing with longs is that just need to make a bigger trap bed . With coils you do not have to . I use both . But what is all said and the pics make it easy to understand . Just my idea .

coydog2,not disagreeing at all,you do have to make a bigger bed but I don't think it takes me any longer in the long run to get a long in the ground and covered than it does a coil spring.I spend much more time getting the coiled trap solid in the bed than I do to get a long stable so it is all a wash in the end as far as I am concerned. For the longs you just cut the bed in the shape of the trap and lay it down,if you dig the shape out right most of the time you just set the trap in and your done. With coils, depending on the soil conditions I usually find myself twisting and tamping and adding dirt under levers and jaws. And on frozen ground like my pics above it can be almost impossible to get a coil completely solid without a lot of playing around.

There is quite a big speed difference between the longspring and the coilspring traps.

Very true, longs ARE faster and lock up better.

No we can't snare as of yet.We are hoping by this coming season though. There is a bill working it's way through the legislature to allow cable restraints.

i'm a coil guy...but it's just a personal preference...i've never had any issues bedding a coil...although my soil conditions may be different than yours, which makes a HUGE difference...i like the smaller bed as it's less digging....and the long springs are another object in the ground that the coyote may feel...another reason i like the coils is that i can fit more of them in the milk crate that i keep in the truck to carry my traps when i'm out setting....not knockin the LS's at all...just a personal preference thing...one of those ford vs. chevy things

Longspring man - never saw a set like that. You just stick the lure bottle on a little flat rock, grass under a shingled pan and good to go!..... grin

You never heard of the lure bottle set?LOL

I realize we are both kidding around a little but Herb Lenon actually used 1/2 oz. lure bottles at sets,he would drill out the top of a stake so the bottle would fit if I remember correctly, maybe Asa will see this and add something or correct me if I am wrong.

Bigkolo asked if we had a pic of a lonspring being bedded down not the finished set. If you took the time to look at the link to my tutorial you'd see the finished. I put the lure bottle there to show where the lure would go while making the set.
