For me, weather determines my catch pretty much, to much snow or not enough, unfrozen rivers, month long -50 cold spells, rain and holidays and birthdays I'm forced to go to, don't have break downs cause I own a Bravo! X2

All good (although evasive...) answers. My best year was 76-77, when I got 237 marten off 3 different lines. About 200 miles of line total. I was trapping full-time, had a partner (who was a factory-trained Skidoo mechanic, luckily!) and my son had just been born. Jason was a "12 gauge baby in a 20 guage bore." He was delivered via C-section. I had hospital bills up the ying-yang. Neither my wife or I were employed at the time and thus we had no insurance. I trapped with a vengeance that winter! Btw, I think those skins brought close to about a $40 average. I also had quite a few lynx, 5 gulos and about 50 fox. Heck, I even chipped open some holes and took a limit of beaver that Spring. My fur check was Big Money for that era, but virtually all of it went to pay medical bills. By Spring I came to realize that I was not going to become a millionaire by guiding hunters in the Spring and Fall, fighting fire in Summer and trapping in Winter. In April 1977 I took a fulltime position with the DNR. Pete

Lot of I's in that, so I guess the partner was just the mechanic. His catch was Zero?

Maybe if Pete would have wrote that in 3rd person point of view, there wouldn't have been so many "I's"..... He probably didn't proofread it either, you gotta give the guy a break, he's been around so long, he made the wheel, square.....

The quota on my registered line is 55 and its a perfect quota for that line.I take that number most every year however due to population fluctuations I have taken as few as 20(not enough juveniles in the harvest),and have doubled it on those occasions when I reached the quota well before christmas with lots of juveniles in the harvest.I have bumped it to 80 a few times based on harvest data. I also help another trapper on his line and take as many marten as he tells me to take.Mostly I help out the old guy with his beaver.

He probably didn't proofread it either, you gotta give the guy a break, he's been around so long, he made the wheel, square..... My partner that year was only involved in sharing one of the 3 lines. I was running the other two lines myself. My partner on the big line, Gary, didn't have time to trap much. He was working 40 hrs per week for Compeau. He spent most of his spare time fixing broken stuff on my Elan! Come to think of it, after doing most of my writing in the early years by chiselling things in stone, I got out of the habit of proofreading and finding things I wanted to change.....! Pete

Pete So you were a fellow Elanrider. You wouldn't have happened to be the one who coined the term "Ballast"? Apparently that's a good thing these days?
