smart beavers are harder to catch than dumb coyotes.

Beaver for me. I have never tried to catch one and don't know how. And most importantly I can't swim.

I find beaver fairly easy to catch if they haven't been educated. For me coyotes were a lot harder but they seem to get easier every year. They must be getting dumber because I continue to make the same mistakes.

I have nothing clever to put here.

It no wonder you aren't catching any coyotes Andrew. You sold me all of your good coyote traps. You got anymore for sale?

both are difficult to catch once educated. same goes for ADC work....if you are trying to get everyone one of them, they are equally difficult to catch. if just fur trapping for the easy ones and moving on.....beaver are easier to catch in my area, mainly because there are thousands of them. the first time i tried to catch coyotes, i caught them; same as beaver.

Dont know that one is harder to catch than the other, educated or not. But there is more work on a beaver start to finish than a coyote.

What else do you have trouble catching? That is exactly the kind of traps that I am looking to buy. Actually, what I bought from you was a bunch of work. I had to clean them, put new springs and levers, baseplate, center swivel and add chain. I should have just bought new, but that wouldn't have been any fun.

I think that J Lord and Buzzard are both right.

If fur trapping they are both easy, maybe Beaver being a little easier to get success on in the beginning, Coyotes seem to have a bit longer learning curve, at least for me. BUt once you get it down I think that coyotes are less work for sure. That being said... In the realm of ADC the most difficult situation I run into is cleaning up my compititions blunders with Beaver. Thank goodness I have those problem jobs and that I can solve those problems. I have lost money on a few... but learned a passel on them as well.

i can catch beaver a lot faster so ill say beaver is easier for me since less preparation goes into it as far as traps and equipment are concerned. but like said before if either become educated its better to just move on unless you have to catch em.

depends on whether you're in lousiana or nebraska.

For example, I find it like 1000 times harder to trap martin than otter here in MO.

Amen Buzzard ! I've had educated beaver give me the run around for almost 3 months...before they slipped up. Most I can get in a day or two...same with coyotes.....but a smart beaver...they can be a challenge.

I am going to say, in my experience, that neither are actually very difficult to catch, but if I had to choose one I would pick the coyote, based on the sole reason, they have such a large area to roam, and right where I currently trap if I miss em the first time through it will be 3-4 days or even upwards to 6 days before they come back through again, so it takes more time.

if your comparing beaver and coyotes that are both "uneducated" and haven't been harassed, then i'd say it's simpler to catch the beaver. neither are difficult, but water sets are much simpler.

yes. a beaver snare doesn't have to be set as exactingly as a yote snare. ;\) heck, i bet it takes me a good 10-15 seconds longer to set a yote snare. LOL!!!

Coyote, beaver can be just as hard, except for the fact they usually don't have the long range coyotes do. Sometimes coyotes don't come through but about every two weeks, it's hard to keep a trap in good working ore=der that long around here.

too hard to answer, for me beaver around here because there are not that many and the areas they are in are very hard to trap due to water levels flucuating overnight sometimes 15 feet.

We had a beaver pond on our land for 20 yrs and they just kept expanding til we couldn't even bush hog our meadow and they flood a hardwood bottom killing some of the trees.

My dad declared war on them. He had never set a trap in his life and he cleaned EVERYONE of them out, All in 330s! He caught around 15.

We have had two come up the creek trying to retake the pond and he caught those two also. We are now beaver free for the first time in over 20yrs

Going by this experience I would say coyotes are harder.

my experience with coyotes is limited, "on purpose".

but, trying to catch a trap shy/wise beaver is a humbling, aggrevating, hair pulling, lesson in humility. either catch them on the first or second night or you're in for some long days. i'm sure there is nothing more frustrating than dealing with one of these characters.

the grump.
