Generally speaking..
Location: Close to thick cover on trails, lanes and 2 tracks
Tips: Dirtholes work fine but need to have backing to prevent them from working the set from the rear
Traps: Any properly tuned and functioning 1.5 is adequate.

There are exceptions to any rule though.

grey can be tricky little buggers. had one dig out a dirt hole that was set for coon this year. one more step and he would of been mine. you can force greys more than reds so make them step where you want.

Most of mine I catch around field edges in the dead furrow that the disc blade makes up against the wood line. The furrow is deep enough to make a decent backing, double dirthole will have a little better result than single. I look for corners and gametrails and set near them. Cornpiles left over from deer hunting (if legal in your state) are a good location too, they get used to finding rodents and squirrels there. you will pick up a few coons there too.

Logging roads near clear cuts, or roads adjacent to overgrown fields are good locations. I trapped in KY most of my life and you'll do better in those thicker places, as the yotes keep them in the woods. Here in MS, they run everywhere open or heavy cover. They like to dig and roll, so if you use skunky call lures, make a step down dirthole. I catch a lot on Backbreaker and various gray fox gland lures. Snare a few too, on those little trails through thick cover.

you will be amazed how many greys fall to a good fruit paste lure or just plain old herring oil

They're attracted to just about anything. Being on location is the biggest thing. I like multiple odors whether at a regular dirt hole or a double or triple or whatever. I am liking a hole at a minimum of 10-12 inches deep reamed out with a stake. Lure's and baits at the bottom, and a cotton ball stuffed in about 4-5 inches deep for eye appeal. If they steal the cotton ball, they get no lure or bait so they just stay and keep working it. I like my trap out about 6 inches. I don't like piling up sticks and blocking, so just tuck my sets into bushes or this tall grass.

south west end of a picked cornfield. thinking of this, not many farmers pick corn anymore. wonder if the loss of these fields over winter has anything to do with the greys population going down?

keep this in mind. grey's are wood edge hunters and red/ yotes are mostly field edge hunters, sure there are exceptions to these rules, but this is the reason why the coyotes will drive out the red first because they compete with each other and they dont necessarily compete so much with the greys

caught 16 this year in cat sets, flashy dirtholes near thick cover, all using some sort of cat lure - powder river cat call, cat-man-do, etc...

Keep the pan a little closer to the hole. I usually just set everything 8" back. I've had several step between the hole and pan.

I caught over forty grays this season, I set firelanes, foot paths in heavy cover and powerlines that have cover , I have found that grays like to hunt in cover and rarly catch them in open fields. As stated earlier old cornpiles are a hot spot. Do not pull your traps after a possum catch ,i have great luck on remakes after possum catches so much so that i dont mind catching possums because i know a fox will be there soon. I use 1.5 rubber jaw traps set tight to the hole. I also use a bait they love and will dig for months , think southern cooking and bananas.
