Well it's my favorite time of the year for trapping! I'm keeping a spring journal seperate from my main journal.

March 13, 2012

I put 5 sets out yesterday to test the waters..

Checked today and had 2 rats! Gotta love it. First muskrat of 2012.

Miss muskrat trapping of my youth. Always a fun spring time activity. Not enough around where I am to trap them.

Well, made the rounds today..checked my original 5 sets that produced 3 rats.

I spent the day in the beautiful weather we had and put in an additional 22 sets out.
Also got to have a nice talk with Jerry (akcowboytrapper) and got a little insight on building wolf traps lol.

Heres the fibertuff with everything ready to go. Minus more stakes

And the rats

Hope everyone is making the most out of this good weather.

Took out a nice young man today that was asking for rat trapping tips. He came in from anchorage and I showed him a few trick and how to set push ups, runs etc.. Anyways a pretty good day 10 rats! He was tickled pink. I love helping other trappers get involved!

I'm up to 53 now and hoping it keeps up!

First 9 traps we checked had 7

The day before I had 5

Yeah trapping is starting to slowly pick up now jerry, I have about 20 sets on both of the open sloughs. Checked out the other side where you were at this winter and there are some nice runs in there! I'm not gonna set it though. Hopefully me and you can make it to my "good" rat spot sometime this spring.

Yeah I would be down. I have a few colony traps over there still just haven't produced since early in the winter froze up pretty good this year wasn't expecting it to freeze that much. some of the spot that have been open all your in the past couple years froze solid at least 6" of ice this year...

I have 21 rat sets out and I've been pulling 5-10 everyday for the last week and a half. Rat count is starting to get up there now!

BUT

Yesterday I made the round to pull all my otter sets and looky what I tagged! grin

Nice female in a 220!! that makes 3 on the year.
It was your basic dive set In a run. Awesome. I love that rush. Now just beaver and rats!

And lots of these suckers.

Nice work so far. I think that you may be trapping in few of the spots that I used to trap 15 or so years ago when I used to live down that way. We used to do pretty well on 'rats with a few mink, beaver, and otter tossed in occasionally for fun.
