Searched the archives, didn't find anything, was wondering if yall had any suggestions. Usually sell my stinky yotes live but got a 55 lb black male, washed him in dish detergent but he still smells like a wet dog some, gonna tan it, any suggestions for getting the smell out? Thanks

I dont know if it would help if dish detergent didnt do much but I used my head&shoulders shampoo on a red fox I shot and it smelled pretty decent after.

Dawn dish detergent and some salt in the water too or Trubond's Lipa solve 55 degreaser in salt water 1/4 lb salt per gallon...probably need to wash and rinse 3 times before pickling skin. Man they stink somethin' awful don't they?

never heard of the trubond degreaser, where do you get it? Yeah, they really do stink, I shot one a couple years ago that didnt stink at all but he had a huge 30-06 exit hole so I had to toss him, most stink to the high heaven though.

After you wash it put it in denatured alcohol for an hour.I use a salt and acid tan and put it right in the bath when it comes out of the alcohol.I don`t worry about salting for a day or two.

Trubond's site is http://www.trubondtanning.com/TruBond-1000B-Paint-on-Tan-for-Back-Skins_c3.htm. Try their tanning system it works real well.

Lutan F is a great tanning product too. The Truebond products just take it to a higher level with less effort. If you want to try smaller batches look at coonhollow taxidermy supply, same thing just in small kit form. Great stuff! I have used both with great results!

Newbold...Kind of. Without breaking the hides yes Trubond gives softer results I think. Lutan F takes more breaking, but I break the hides regardless of the tan and they are both soft at the end.

at what point are you doing this washing? Right after skinning?

Is there a way to remove the funk smell on a dried hide? Mine stinks! Not sure if I am going to sell or tan and keep it...

any tips on home tanning would be great...this would be the perfect hide to try it on. I have a partially eatn lynx that would also be another good one.

Just remember soaps act like bacteria on a hide, detergents like Dawn do not.

I've washed coyotes for years. The easiest way, is use an automatic, throw in yotes, punch them down in the water to get the trapped air out of the skins, pour in a shot of any kind of laundry detergent, and let them wash for no more than 4-5 min. If they are extremely dirty or bloody, let them soak for a half hour. After they spin, and while the washer is refilling, give them a shot of hair conditioner. I do three at a time and they come out beautiful and they don't stink.
