I have had some success using a wire hook on the end of the drowner to catch the snare. Try putting a stop above the weight on the drowner to shorten the snare before it finds the hook.

OK I follow the snare set up, I use snares on my coyote and cat line. The problem Im having getting my tiny brain around this is: When a critter hits a snare the snare closes, hoepfully quickly, now when the snare pops off the wammy and support pole the critter continues to move ahead, or maybe even sucks back. The snare is now on the animial and by the snare being anchored solid when the critter continues to move the cable comes tight and the loop is sucked down secure enough that their will be very little chance of escape. The problem Im having in figuring this out is: when the beaver hits the loop it comes closed, mostly, now the beaver continues down the slide and the snare on a drowning wire continures with it. Now if the beaver feels this length of cable dragging along in the water why not just back outa the snare, the cable will give a little being on a drowner and maybe afford enough slack for the beaver to escape. Is this even a legitimate concern, is my thinking way off, would the beaver dive out or instinct - hit the end of the slide then the end of the snare and suck everything tight? Am I making any sense at all, did I forget my medication today, I think I might go and commit myself. wew .... lol. Im probably over analyzing. Thanks for any advice, ADC thanks for the drawings, Im guessing then that the snares it the drawings are attached to the drowning cable with just a basic drowning lock?

Ive done it, and it works but seems usually a tangled mess at end of drowner. I think a drowning rod would be much more user friendly when retreiving your catch. Possibly a long extension instead of drowner, with a fair sized weight close to short snare would have some merit also.

If you are considering yourself to be someone of influence and importance, just try ordering someone elses dog around sometime.

yep, rods are the way to go when it comes to snares on drowners or foot trap that matter ... but like others said cable works to ... used it for years before the rods and still do at times if need be the rods i make are 1/4" round 6 & 8 foot long ... i just bend loops on each end and weld them shut ... usually staked at each end or used with a heavy drowner weight on the deep water end ... i also make heavy duty drowner locks for the rods i'll try to get some photos of what i'm talking about ... but for now here's a foot trap set up on one of my rods ... same set up with a snare ... here's a pic of the lock and loop end

Newt's beaver snaring video has a great method for putting snares on drowners. Uses a sash weight to drown the beaver. Check it out.

Rob, Trapper Art in Cornell, WI sells drowning rods (very reasonable) if you wanted to make some and needed a pattern. In one of his videos he talks about snaring beaver and using drowning rods.
I sure agree with Don and anyone else who thinks rods are the way to trap beaver. Only difference I use CDRs with mine. The beaver I've snared I can count on both hands.
I'm rich enough to buy anything I want, I just have to be careful on what I want.

Wow! I've always wondered about snares on drowners. Now I know. I hate loosing 20.00+ beaver traps to theives. This is something that I will try in areas that are potentially high theft areas.
NOTE TO VEGETARIANS: My food poops on your food! Enjoy your salad!!!

The "Paint Program" rendition of the drowning rod calls for rebar. I would think a smooth rod would be better. The other photos show smooth rod. You'd think that, but the guys who use rebar don't seem to have any troubles, plus smooth rod costs way more unless you use that tiny 1/4" stuff possumskinner has pictured but it requires a weight at the end so it doesn't get all bent up if I remember right. ~ADC~
