Wooden stakes may work . But I'd be reluctant to try it ,maybe if you have an ATV to pack'em with . I wouldnt try it , but if ya have too make them at least 30 inches and take a sledge hammer (cause its gonna be tough pounding)and i have no idea how you will fasten on them other than drill a hole.

I'm no expert.....

but I have never considered, even for a second, to use a wood stake for anything related to the word coyote.

Cable or chain to a tree.Hook it so it will spin. You could use good sized rocks or sections of solid logs as drags.

ive used plenty of wood stakes, held every coyote too. Depends on your soil, unfroze ground for starters, they work great in clay sod. use good hardwood, cut them about 1" x1"x 12 or so inches long. cut points on bottom. Take a wood rasp and bevel the top on all 4 sides, very important or the wood may split when you pound it in the ground. about 1" from the top drill a hole the same size as the shaft as the eye bolt you will use fasten the swivel to the stake. dont overtighten the nut and use a lockwasher. They are cheap, easy to make in the off season, they hold better than 2 cross staked rebar stakes and that is a fact. youll have to dg them out or just split the top of the stake with a hatchet and pull your trap out. hope this helps you.

In the sandy soil I have, I wouldn't even think of trying wood stakes. I like 2 rebar 1/2 inch stakes 24 inches long and double stake all coyote sets.

IMO wood is superior in muck bottoms , where the wood swells and hold great , but not even a chioce for coyote or land a drag would be the better choice or an extension cable to get some solid ie small tree good stake Piont

Tell ya what im up for a good challenge . i'll just make one of those wood stakes and hook it up to the four wheeler and see how much effort it takes to pull it out. then try two rebar stakes , might learn something with this test.

I'm here to tell you a 12 to 14 " wood stake in typical clay loam you could not pull out by hand no matter how strong you are.

I've used wood stakes in the past in areas that I have to hike a long way into. I've never had a coyote pull one. For the most part I use green limbs from trees in the area if I can. Sometimes I use fallen limbs. Have to be careful driving them or you will split them.

Make you a drag out of a small sapling. Use a heavy guage wire and double it. I use them quite often works great,

trapper 1000 try a lawn mower to do your stake pulling test, that way you can see for yourself if ya trust your wood stakes.

The stakes you use reflect on other trappers so the coyote is not running around with steel on it.
Don't forget the swivels !

A coyote cant stand above it and pull,so it will do the next-best thing it knows how to do,
and thats PULL !! Pull from every angle, dig with their back-feet,chew the stake, wrap your chain around it
then when it has puleed a few times in 4-directions it will compact-the clay into an elongated sguare, and off he goes !
Your trap and all your work to set it is gone, and you just made ALL trappers look bad !

I've always told my kids, you can learn from my mistakes or your own,One-way is easier !! you decide !
