That was a bonus to see that goat anyway! I always like seeing them down low. I had a cat take a nap in front and behind one of my cubby's a few weeks ago so i feel your pain lol

I have a picture somewhere of 3 goats swimming the Valdez Narrows in January,... but I think it's probably on a slide,.. thinking it was early 1980's maybe. I almost hit a goat with my car right at Bridal Veil Falls in the winter once right in the middle of the Richardson Hwy,... and a few years ago this goat had apparently fallen off a cliff & broke one of his horns off,... and was right along the road at the bottom of Thompson Pass,... heavy snow years like this one bring them down to the beach quite often actually,.. great pictures!

I thought maybe he was in a snare for a min. That looks like a cable or something. ;0)

That's what i thought too, FT. Is the heavy snow pushing the wolverines down toward the beach?

I turned the latest wolverine this morning and took a couple of pictures-





The front legs are inside and complete with claws. I boraxed the front legs and paws real good so it should dry just fine, I hope.

I like the diamond and throat patch on that one. I've noticed some guys tack the back legs on the front and some to the back/sides on wolverine. Does it make a difference or personal preference?

I have no idea. I am getting this one tanned for my wall and I just pinned them to the belly side. I am curious to find out myself.

I got my snare materials in the mail today. Headed out to the shop to make some to set out tomorrow while I check. Stay tuned!

Just got back from checking the line. Pretty miserable out there. Rain and the wind started to pick up on my way back. Not even a single set of tracks from any kind of critter. I did get 2 snares out today and rebaited a couple of the buckets with fresh goat bones so hopefully that will grab their attention. I wanted to get more snares out but the tide is outgoing during the day today and I really don't want to risk getting stuck when I am by myself. Hopefully on saturday we can get some more out.

Pushing a skiff down the beach is no fun...course the Lunds I crew up in are a bit lighter than that nice work skiff you got.

Nice put up on the wolverine FH. Hard to imagine trapping in the rain and messing with the tides. That's a whole different game down there. Good luck.

Yeah that pacific skiff is built like a tank. We have to have durable boats for what the seasonals put them through every year. I have had a couple of close calls, but I was able to walk the boat back to the water.

I am hoping for nice cooler weather again. We got spoiled after all the snow. The wind wasn't too bad when I ran the line but its blowing to beat the band now.

That is a nice looking wolverine! Where would we order borax from? I was thinking to get either borax or alum, or are these the same thing? I'll bet it works better than salt what I've used on some real fatty otters.

I ordered mine from the grocery store. Not sure what russian mission has but if you have a grocery store there they should carry it.

I think alum and borax are different but they will get you to the same end. Dry pelts.

20 Mule Team Borax should be in most grocery stores, by the laundry detergents.

Today's check was for you FT!

Got our first wolverine in a snare. Pretty small female, the smallest one we have caught so far. The snare was homemade with 3/32 1x19 and a sure lock. I wasn't sure how the lock was going to function, it didn't seem to slide really easily down the cable but it worked. Caught her right behind the front legs. She managed to trip off the 330 that is set there also, but she didn't get caught in it.

It was caught at the same location as the first two. We haven't seen smaller tracks in that spot before, so there is at least one more working the area.

She got herself wrapped up pretty good.


At the spot where I found the otter holes I saw where they were coming up under a log from the beach so I put an mb750 in their trail and managed to pick up a medium otter today.



Overall it was a pretty good check. We also had wolverine tracks at the spot north of this one but it didn't check out any of the sets. I also had an otter go right up to a 330 cubby baited with salmon heads but the belisle was frozen in. Got that working again.
