Been using hoops for some time. I use a leather hole punch to go around the hide and punch the holes, then just slip on the hog ring. Saves on my fingers. I may use to many rings, but I like how it turns out.

glandman, those hoops were made by a trapper I knew. He used 3/8 rod and they started out round, just press in sides to get the oval. Had three sizes small, med and large since they only adjust so far. Stiff enough to hold the shape. I also have the store bought ones where you need a tension bar to get the oval.

I use hoops for my smaller beaver around 30 pounds or smaller and boards for the larger ones I use a heavy string to pull the middle of the hoop in to make the oval

On the beaver above I used pins stuck into a thick piece of insulation. I've gone to using castration bands on the front legs and a piece of lath board with pins on the hind legs. One thing on the hog rings, if you go to the farm store to buy them keep them all the same size.
