headed east for a four check coon/rat line.... i have one dozen 11os and some ought jumps for rats... need some ideas for open pond rat trapping with the jump traps... will have runs covered with the conis... no huts or feed beds so set footholds on... open water ponds

anybody ever just drive a 4' piece of rebar and wrap no. 9 wire around it and leave enough for the little trap to set on right under the waters edge and then just wire some corn or apple to the rebar????

take me to where the blacktop ends.. then go further with me

Or simply slick some mud up on the bank and set your trap in front of it, stake in deep water.

more than likely the rats are eating roots along the bank or grasses set them spots with a 1 1/2 coil or 11 some that will drown em quick and hold the blundering coon if he happens by

ya can mock up a feedbed. kick in a flat spot for your foot trap attach to drowners; pull up some grass wash off the rots pile em in front of traps-attractors anise or carrot oil or your favorit rooty tooty rat lure.

I've had good luck with platform sets, limited success with floats.

The muskrats around here tunnel into the bank to make their dens which is why there aren't any huts; the dens will have 2 or 3 runs coming from them with one being the main run. if you can identify the main run and put a colony trap on that run you can catch 2 or 3 at a time.

setting the approaches to feeding areas can be good too.

your rebar/wire set will work well, also a willow branch/wire set is cheaper laugh

I made up some things I call pole sets. I posted pics last year. Basically take a 2 x4 about 3 feet long and make a small shelf about 10 inches below the top to put a trap on. Then put a nail near the top with an ear of corn or slice of apple on it. Staple the trap chain to lower part and just push the pole into the mud far enough the traps just under the water surface. Muskrat gets caught n jumps off and drowns. Works good. I took 12 out of a small farm pond the last two days using these and cobibears in the runs

If you have dens left and run out of 110's, just set a jump up inside the den entrance and wire to deeper water. Their feet are still touching the bottom when they are coming out of the den. I have caught hundreds of 'rats with footholds in dens, long before I ever heard of a Conibear.

Or make a pocket set. Rats love holes. Dig a pocket or kick the bank at the waterline w/ your boot. A little rat lure back in the pocket and place a foothold in front like Bismuth said.

Don't go all crazy now. Floats don't work everywhere. Not all rats are SD rats. Some won't climb onto a float to save their lives. They won't here...and I/ve caught plenty of rats off floats.

Pockets if you have the bank for it will take most rats most places.

I will also agree, victor 1 1/2 with the humped cross pan took many a den hole rat as I was growing up

We averaged less than 1 rat per day off 6 floats that sat out all 9 days that I had traps out this fall. Every rat came off the same float that was about 5 feet from a huge hut. I'd have set the hut but it was on the wrong side of the fence so a float near it was the next best thing. Every other rat came from other pocket/bank/den/hut sets. Last year floats were better in the fall. If I could figure out why the dramatic change, I'd catch way more rats I'm sure.
