my house is sitting at about 2500 feet. what should i look for in an area? my trapping mentor says about 5000 feet for marten. (not that i dont trust him just looking for more input) he also suggested bare or lightly forested big timber ridges for marten. and before i take over my own thread with all my marten questions, does anyone know of a good forum on here that discusses all this?

208, head up into the st joe-cd'a divide or the id-mont divide area.

Biggest problem I see in the north here is the terrain and weather dictates what we can do. Lot simplier elsewhere...The marten Kenny and I got earlier was at 6500' but you can't get in there now without snowshoeing and this ole man ain't doing it

you don't have to see them and won't till they are wearing a steel braclet :-)

I have been in my area for 30+ years and can only say I have seen two while hunting and I'm up there from last of august till first part of Nov. most of the time.

In Southern BC marten habitat starts at about the 4000 foot level. The farther North you go the lower the elevation for the habitat.

white I thought you told us you caught some below sea level. cool

That was way back when he was scouting out the Mariana trench. Turned up no furbearers, but lots of other stuff with, at this time, no commercial value, so he went back to McGrath where the BIG money is!
Here the marten can be found from sea level to the tops of the mountains, say 4K', but understand that that can happen in less than a mile, sometimes far less, as in straight up.

So how much did Moses charge to help carry those things down? Hourly, or by the pound?

What do you mean 'help carry' ? I just dictated what should be carved and left it at that.

I target marten at about 4500-5500 feet. Too much snow to get any higher although some of the 9000+ mountains around here have always intrigued me. I look for spruce stands with decent canopy. Stay away from lodgepole downfall. Snow level means nothing. Frozen creeks, ridges, and a good amount of food are all things I look for. Marten tracks are also a big plus, but I'll still set without sign as they seem to move around a lot depending on the time of year. Good luck!

Art is that really you?
Now I feel sorry about how bad I traded traps for cast iron ware!
I could send you a tin can boiler if you need something to cook with?

smile
Nice looking camp btw.
