Discovered something nice today...after getting some traps in that had some of that nasty stuff on them (DIP) I wanted to remove it. So I figured a gas bath and a brush would remove most of it...WRONG. Well...after a couple rinses and sitting there looking at them a lightbulb went off and I decided to mix a small test batch of 50/50 water and white vinegar and see how a soak in that would do. Here's the results (JUST rinsing...NO brushing) next to a trap that came out of the gas bath...

Was this just a fluke or am I on to something? I'm going to make a larger vinegar soak and put the others in there to get this crap off of them.

I take it you don't really care for a dipped trap?
Looks as if they were ready to go when you got them.

I haven't tried it for that, but to take the glare off new snares, an overnight soak in vinegar mixed with water works great.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

Well here are the results...maybe it was a fluke but it worked GREAT...Didn't even need to brush them, just a good rinse with a garden hose!

Here's a trap that just got rinsed with the garden hose next to 2 traps...one dipped with what I guess is speed dip and the other with what looks like a coating of F1 before they were rinsed off...

Here's a closer view of the rinsed off trap next to the speed dipped trap that has not been rinsed with the garden hose.

I decided to dump a few of the rinsed off traps in the sun on the way to the shed so you guys could see how clean they came...

Oh and if the brown vinegar is less expensive the day you buy it...it works equally well. Tom

The local "Sharp Shopper" joint up the road has white for 1.99 a gallon. That's about as cheap as it gets around here for any vinegar. I get a couple everytime we go just to stock up LOL...

I agree ... it works pretty good when only needing to clean up a few ... but when needing to do more than a few I've had good results just cold soaking in sani flush, no boiling or simmering , followed by a good power washing ... might have to spot brush a few stubborn ones

here's vinegar at work

I cut this vinegar about 70/30 (water-70 vinegar-30). I have been using 50/50 but I figured I would try a weaker mix and see how it would do.

Have no idea what strength vinegar is you guys buy but the vinegar I buy at WALMART is, I believe, 3% when bought(already 97% water).

Have seen how good it works for dip removal, does it work that well removing last years wax and crud with just a soak and spray off with hose?? would be much easier than boiling in sani flush as I do now if thats the case. Thanks, Fur

I have been soaking mine in a 60 vinegar 40 water mix for two days now with no sign of a clean trap. Looks the same as when I put the dipped trap in. How long did you let it set Blue?

I've used straight white vinegar for several years and it works great! I put all my dp's in it then come back a few days later and powerwash them off. I have left them in long enough that the bubbles were to the top of the bucket and the crud fell right off immediately.

Just so no one is under the misconception that there is some critical level of acetic acid(the active component in rust removal with vinegar), there are many different vinegars that are derived from different fermentation processes and/or different ethanol sources. The strong vinegars which can contain over 20% acetic acid are usually sold as laboratory or industrial grade(believe that vinegars may not contain over 18% acetic acid in Canada but there are likely exceptions for lab use) and the commonly sold diluted vinegars usually run from 4% up to about 8%. Whether you use them as obtained from the store or dilute them further with water will affect the acidity(pH level). Diluting the vinegar will likely reduce the rate of the chemical reactions that you are counting on to clean the metal but should have no other effect. Whether I add water depends on whether I need more volume to cover the batch of traps I am cleaning. If I dilute the vinegar in order to cover the traps I can expect it to take longer for the rust to be removed. Because I am not certain what the dips are that are being removed by folks in this thread, I do not know what chemical processes are going on. Perhaps what is actually happening is that a thin laver of rust beneath the dip is being removed and the dip is released, or perhaps there is an actual chemical reaction between the dip and some component of the vinegar.

The reasoning behind my dilution was simply to cover my traps. Just wanted to get the most out of a smaller amount of vinegar even if it took a little longer.
