My biggest is 13 pound 31 inches long on an 6 1/2 foot old berkley ultra light pole with 6 pound test. i went out with a couple other guys and they laughed at me for using such light tackle. The same guy who laughed atr me broke off a cat smaller than mine and he was using 15 pound test. He was never so mad when i told him maybe you should go heavier on the tackle ;]
But where i fish for cats isnt known for huge cats like where you guys are from our lake record is 35 pounds. Plus the reason i use light tackle is cause its funner to go as light on tackle as possible for the biggest fish possible. makes it a lot more of a challenge

i just use an old cheap zebco reel that has at least 10 pound test on it. circle hooks, 1 large splitshot and the gut pouch of a small bream for bait, the head works great too. Sometime's i'll use my bass baitcaster if there is heavy cover since it has 50 lb braid on it. hardly ever bobber fish. I love seein my pole bent over with a big cat on it. I use the clip-on bell's even in daylight because i usually use another pole to fish for bluegill or bass to pass time until the big one hits. i can't call my self a pro catfisherman by anymeans but i do enjoy a nice fight and some fried up channel cat.

I caught a nice 10 lb. cat tonight with nothin but 8 lb. mono, 2 bite on weights(split shot), spring loaded trebble hook and some "Magic Bait" Ole Whisker Beef Blood. Nothin beats catfishin with light tackle.
