do you extract the essence right after he is out of the trap or do you do it in the fur shed,

Excellent post, I tried the one adc recommends and it worked good until the weather got really cold. Then I had several of the plasic tips break off, at the most inopportune times LOL. I purchased one of the aluminum heads that covers everything but the needle and really like it. Possum Skinner you could have saved me a lot of money had you posted this a few years ago. LOL
I wear disposable rubber gloves and use a scalple also sold at the tractor supply stores, and take the sack out before extracting the essence. Then skin and flesh the skunk. I always extract the essence at the fur shed NOT in it, just incase...Tom

You can bet I'd never endorse a method that wasn't.

PS tom, I agree and like I said earlier in another post, if you doing lots of skunks, these cheap methods may not be for you. It works to get me an ounce or two and that's all I need.

Thanks ADC. Is this a legitimate method to dispatch coon in live traps as well? I'm thinking of situations where a .22 can't be fired.

NO! see the bold print at the bottom of my origional post....

"*Note: Don't try to use this for dispatch of more aggressive animals such as coons, fox, coyotes, etc... as you will end up with broken needles and bitten syringes."

I have used this method for about 25 years. The guy(Skunks something) from Wisconsin was at our trappers convention in Grayling,Mich.. Its worked well for me. Though I don't just hold the syringe like he used it. Mine is more on the line of two(2) poles. One to hold, the other to inject. And I have noticed that the need for the 10-12cc in the fall versus 5-6 in the spring. More in the fall because now the skunk has more body fat to deal with. And in a timely and considerate manner for dispatch.
Try it you'll like it.

I just finished putting mine together. I used a 5 foot PVC pole (3/4 inch inside diameter) and a 5 foot PVC flex pole (5/8 inch outside diameter) to be the push pole inside (bent it slightly so it was fairly snug. Picked up some 12cc syringes and 16G needles. Drilled a 3/8inch hole in an end plug and it all works great. Total cost was less than $5. Bought a gallon of acetone for about $12 I think too. I bought a 32cc syringe for extracting uring from bobcat as well, much easier/cleaner than my old method.

I know you guys have been successful with 3 footers, but I feel a bit more comfortable with 5 foot. PCV is light so it is not too heavy. I have been hit directly before from that distance.

Thanks for all the ideas.

I use an 18 guage needle to extract the essence, into a 60cc syringe, then I inject this into a red tip test tube.

I am going to make a pokey pole, a possum pokey pole that is.

Buck, I would not glue the cap on cause I would get sick of the syringe hanging up when I tried to side it down the tube. And you know it will happen, of coarse if you are a clean freak it may not. Heck I will be lucky to find the parts of everything when needed, be using the pole to beat cows with, etc....LOL
