Spring holes sets work fine. The biggest issue is finding the right conditions. You need a stable water level that won't freeze but isn't too deep and wide enough that the bait/lure can only be reached by accessing it from the trap side. I think RBC has been nailing some coyotes lately using a spring hole set and posted some pictures.

How would the spring hole set work in a creek or lake where the water kinda goes back in a place and settles sometimes. Or does the set have to be in a stable water puddle area?

It can be made in a calm spot on a stream edge.

Thank you much,
what part of AK are you in? I live in Palmer and pretty much trap close to home, after work and weekends. Have tons of mink, muskrat, river otter this way and doing pretty good this season. I see a lot of fox sign in my area but I have not trapped for fox much here in AK, mainly learned canine trapping in the lower 48 using dirt hole and [Please excuse my language... I'm an idiot] pole sets, any suggestions for me for good snow sets or other fox sets for AK would sure be appreciated.

Hey there lbtrapper,
try the areas near the rivers and creeks (once you see more open water) and use 110 conibears along the bank where the muskrat frequent. Anyplace we have muskrat here we have mink, the swim almost as much as muskrat, under the ice, under the banks, etc. and right up into the muskrat dens even looking for a meal. A good set I use for mink here is the blind set but nearby I use a little mink call lure (especially now and in the spring) about 2' off the ground.......it will at least get them in the area. I had 2 rats eaten 1/2 way out of the 110 conibears they were in the other day from under the water and ice. MINK!

Anyway, I find a place on the bank near muskrat sign and put the 110 conibear along a water path, 1/2 way in the water and half sticking up. Let me take a few pics when I check the sets and I will post them as you have.

I have found that bobcat urine works better on fox because sometimes a fox will shy away from coyote urine. But thats just me.

Cool fox thread . Here are a few fox related pics from here and there . Warning... pic heavy. This may be a pain to load if you are in a sheep tent on a hill somewhere with dial up. laugh

Here are a few of mine.

A nice snowy fox.

Here is a large dirt hole that I have prepaited for two years now. Has been providing fox each year. You will notice that I used a weed wacker (the swing type) to mow a path from one field to another. I also made a trail to another large pre bait hole 20 yards away. Half way between the two holes I fond a nice prominent clump of grass growing that looked like a natural scent post. I ended up with three reds in this big hole set and two greys in the grassy scent post.

The large hole.

Here is a double. There is a bobbed tail red fox caught in the large hole and a grey caught in the grassy scent post in the background.

Here is the grey in the scent post. Look at the clump of grass in the picture. I caught two greys in the same set a week apart.

Another snowy red.

Here is a digger red. He dug my trap so I bedded another one right up tight to the initial trap. The fox knew the trap was there and when he came back for another free meal he got a surprise.
