The most important thing is to let the critters tell you where to set. There is nothing more educating than to take a walk in the snow. When you find sign, try to figure out why they are using that area.Once you start having some success, you will figure it out pretty quickly. You will be able to look over a property and know where the more productive areas should be.
I like to set where two or more logging roads intersect when i'm setting in the woods. When trapping fields,i like to find where a road enters from the woods and the outside corners.Because these places are productive for me ,I tend to key on them.

can some of you pros beter explain how you make you sets. i am going to try and catch a couple next season with 1.5 dukes and have tried to make some practice sets just by your finished set pucs and cant figure it out. also will a single 18 inch rebar stake hold a fox

This is my most productive spot, it is an intersection of 3 hedgerows, 2 roads, and there is a nice gulley that runs up the hill to the left. Caught them on dirtholes and scent posts here.

Female red that i got in a cable, you can see the obvious trail they had cut in the brush.

I use all 1.75s mostly BMI and Sleepies, with shock springs and 12-16" berkshire cables.

The stake depends on your soil. I use 24" 3/8 rebar. Stake it in and try and pull it out. You'll have to judge based on that. A 1 1/2 is a good fox trap, but you need some pan tension or you will have sprung traps and toenails. I learned that the hard way. A red fox weighs about 10-12 lbs. Its my personal opinion that you're better off a little heavy on tension than too light.

I dont use rebar, but it will hold a fox, they pull sideways on a stake not up like a coyote so they wont be able to jack it out. I would add some pan tension to them, 2-3lbs is what mine are set at
