I have been reading the book," The Final Frontiersman" for the past few days. It is really fascinating and I can picture myself in his shoes in many ways.

While reading the author talked about Heimo trapping a wolverine. I was wondering how far south are wolverines found? I have heard some stories that they were in northern New England. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks'

Historically, they were found as far south as California. Today there may still be some at the higher altitudes in New Mexico and even Arizona. Their northward retreat happened at the same time as the disappearance of the bison. Not saying that the two things are related (although they may be) just contemporaneous.

I do know that they could show up in very unlikely places for such a critter. Only a handful of years back, a wolverine was found trying to get into a local farmer's lambing barn. He went after it with a pitch fork, as was heard, and it turned on him and he jumped in his pickup and ran it over. The Fish and game had it mounted and is resting at the Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge in the extreme North Eastern edge of MT. To put that into perspective, that puts this large male wolverine darn near into ND! The country by here, where it was living, was as hardcore farm country as anywhere in the Mid West, minus the rees. This is just to give you an idea on the possibilities of how far, such a little known about critter, can roam, and the type of country one could take up residence! It was very "odd" to say the least. So who knows, anything is possible. BTW, this story can be researched, lol!

Does anyone have a credible knowledge of when the last one was seen in Colorado?

Rick you said you have them in Idaho. Are you allowed to trap them?

While I'm thinking about Idaho, anyone knows what Ken Johnson is up too? Haven't heard from him in a long time. I guess all these deployments have something to do with it.

thats a great book!

ive heard reports of sightings in Northern Minnesota fairly recently but were totally unsubstantiated. I also know of one person in southern MN who sees them all the time LOL.

It's estimated that she walked over from Ontario in the winter. I've got an article related to it somewhere.

They did DNA testing on some hair, it's a female wolverine and closely related to wolverine from ontario.

A friend of mines dad killed one when he was a young boy up in Northern Minnesota. I would guess about 40 years ago.
We chased on off a field in Boisevain Manitoba (just north of the ND border) about 10 years ago while goose hunting. Really cool looking. We followed it for a couple of miles. It just kept loping along.

Now there's a guard animal you wouldn't want around. Heck you wouldn't want to go out to the outhouse at night, that's for sure. I can't imagine what type of pen you would need to keep one of those guys enclosed.

I can't remember when it was published, but they were using the most current information at the time...however, it is no longer the most current information. \:\)

(and i just can't imagine WHO, besides myself of course, would want a wolverine for a "pet".

I would just want one to dispose of bodies and such.

We have had them here from time to time, seems they like to travel and look for new country. You would think that as many trappers that are out there would be more accidental catches, but I have never heard of one here.

A friend of mine by the name of Glenn Bystrom, caught one near Tower, MN. in the 50's. He was a good wolf trapper, and caught the wolverine by Putnam lake in a no. 14 Newhouse. Back then it was pretty thick wilderness in that country, and still is somewhat wild.

I trapped the same country in the 70's but never saw a wolverine track. I would say there could still be a couple around. Not too many peole using big enough traps to hold them reliably anymore.

They aren't a critter that you'd catch accidentally. They are pretty darned wary of anything out of the ordinary in their territory.

There was one 2 years ago that was trapped in Montana that had been released in Colorado. They had collared it and had followed its path from Co up through Wyo and Idaho and 2 different routes through Yellowstone Nat park into Montana near Missoula.

Or if the trapper did catch it, it never made the news because they never found his body.

Does anyone have a credible knowledge of when the last one was seen in Colorado?

Slyder,

A friend of mine works for the BLM in Colorado, he and his brother took their boys up on the divide a couple of years ago to prescout some elk country....

They told me they saw 2 up above the tree line... I will ask where they saw it, the next time I see the brother that still lives down here......

Good Luck and God Bless you and yours,

Supposedly, we have a few in Oregon. I met a guy that swears he saw one in the Cascades....he also claims he was completely sober at the time...LOL.

Habitat is "right" in some places and I think they could migrate over from the bordering states. The wolves are making it here from Idaho now...so I think there must be some here.

I can easily believe they could be in the Cascades. Particularly in higher elevations and roadless areas. If you begin getting wolves, I believe you will see an increase or development of a wolverine population.
