No offense Bryan, but being a fairly experienced woodworker, I would not use Linseed oil, It is merely a penetrating oil that holds little, if any protective properties . If you were to use any rubbing oil (which I would not suggest...They take along time to dry...Up to 2 or 3 weeks depending on conditions, and they always have a faint smell) then I would go for a Tung oil/poly wipe on blend. You can find this at menards or home depot. If it were me, I would just go straight poly or varnish, probally in a spray can. High gloss produces the most durable finish, but any other finish (semi or satin) will do also. A few light coats should be enough.

nobody try chalk board paint and camo paint ultra flat, you keep low profil and keep your basket alive for longtime, with Jonathan tip for bottom base it's better

Chicken,

Jonathan hit the nail on the head in the above post.

My wife has been making baskets for a few years. You'll find, that if you talk to most any good basket maker, they will tell you an oil finish is the only way to go.

First off, put some 1/4" hardware cloth in the bottom so stakes and traps don't poke a hole through the side of the basket where it's weakest, most baskets don't need sealing if you dry them out well at night. my baskets that I use on my rat line last 15-18 years with the bottoms reinfoursted.

Just noticed the pictures did not come through to illustrate my treatment of the bottom of the basket. Here they are.

I use polyurethane (Varathane brand) applied with a brush. It gives an extremely hard, protective, waterproof coating to the splints. (I would avoid getting it on a leather harness.) My 30 year old Clint Ishman hickory basket is like new.
