It will work fine, but I would put some wire mesh in over one of the holes so they don't come through that way. I would also slip something on the rat traps trigger to make a bigger target area, I also use wire mesh for this. Other than that, your set up looks good, just make sure you have some good bait/lure, and a good location with good sign, and you will catch weasels.

Here's a cheap and easy way to make a larger pan for your rat/weasel trap. Cut a soda can in half and smash it flat. Then fold the sides inward so that they fit on the inside of the rat trap jaws. Cut a small hole near one edge... just big enough to slip the triangular wedge from the trap pan through, and crimp the wedge down flat onto the soda can. Viola! You're done. Be careful, though. Those rat traps pack a wallop!

Also, you might want to use a small piece of extra aluminum from the can to slip under the short arm of the springs. In time, they'll dig into the wood and become less effective, if they don't have a support.

Snowstorm you should move your questions over to the current weasel thread, for some real expert opinions.http://www.trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2273094/Re_Weasels_ermine_2010_2011_Th.html#Post2273094
The pan is to get the weasel to land on it going into the trap...bang dead;
therefor you need the sides just a little bigger than a wooden rat trap..no escpe route or sloppy hit.\
wire of the strike bar should be covered so it does not rust and mark the weasel, blood is very caustic and rust the wire fast, extra tap should go on the spring and bar cause this can mark the pelt.
the weasels sure did move after the last blow here.

With the way things drift out on the prairies then a tied string going up to a tall treelimb, saves a lot of time digging in a overnight snow drift and looking for a burried trap

lbtrapper we cant use a longspring for ermine in manitoba..
i will try hard to find time to bring you the correct traps to catch that bugger..
if i cant make it all the way to your house i will at least drive to your dads job site and give them to him..
do you have any anise oil??
if not i will cut up some bait for you with anise oil

we have regs what we can use for every critter..
and in a "open zone" you cant use them.
on the back few pages you can see what we can use.

http://www.manitoba.ca/conservation/wildlife/trapping/pdf/trap_guide_201011_final.pdf

i dont really mind the only part that ticks me is i cant use a normal snare for wolf or squirrel.
all my snares have to be the power snare type.
but 99% of my trapping is done with a killing type trap so it does not effect me.
