I was plannin on goin out and findin a old blender or grinder of some sort to try fish paste this next season and was wondring if you add anything to the paste or use just use it like it is. The three main fish i will probally use will be either bluegill, carp, or minnows.

Another question i had was how well does fish paste work for mink?

Thanks,
Luke

go with a meat grinder if you try grinding fish or you'll see just how fast a blender can smoke and die on ya! lol

fish meal and fish oil is another route! you can even throw in some fish flavored cat food

mink like fresh bait, but have taken them on fresh salted and lure alone. I'm sure a few will find interest in it.

Foget the minnows and bluegills unless it's all you have. Go with the carp, suckers or any other type of oily fish. If you only have a blender then gut, dehead and cut in small pieces. Don't try to put in too much, or as Possum Skinner points out, you'll burn the motor up. It can be done but is very time consuming.

go to a flea market or hit yard sales ... i always pick up a couple every year ... they hold up good but some of the cast internal parts break and ya gotta move on to the next one!

usually only pay a couple bucks for smaller ones maybe $10 for a used #32

Haven't had much luck with the small, kitchen type blenders. Much better luck with a small hand grider. The blades on the blender just clog up too easily and it overheats. I grind my "stuff" in a grinder with the large holed plate first, and then with the plate that has spaghetti sized holes. This won't make an actual paste, but will get it pretty fine, plenty fine for bait or lure unless you want to apply it as a liquid from a squirt bottle.

I bought the largest meat hand grinder I could get at the ACE store. Cost, it has been a few years, maybe 35.00.

Flea markets, or often around here, estate sales. There are local listings of homes, property, and contents listed every week in the papers here. Mine was my parents used for grinding pickle relish. It's way past the food grinding stage now, LOL.
P.S. There are people that go to these auctions and estate sales every week looking for bargains. Put your "feelers" out and someone may pick one up for you if they run across it, they are pretty common. Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops sell new ones also.

Wal-Mart sells hand grinders for about 15$ They work great for making paste and deer burger. Just don't use the same one. (well I guess you could)

I add a LITTLE vanilla or cherry extract to the paste works pretty good.

One day I will figure this game out.

I grind bluegill or perch minnows that are caught in a large minnow trap. They are 1" to 2" long. I mix them with canned jack mackeral. Its less than a buck a can at the grocery store. Mix it about half and half and grind to a paste.

I have the wife save me yogurt cups and butter dishes to freeze it in.

Does anybody know if I mix glycerin in it next year to keep it from freezing, Will it will stay good in the deepfreezer?

If the glycerin keeps it from freezing will it rot in the freezer?

pilgrim - you can put it in the freezer and have no worries. Less chance of any freezer burn too.

Good containers are made from the large kool-aid concentrate containers - nowadays they come with a tapered/funnel end. I cut them off down to the threads. Nice wide mouth container!

Thanks for the info skinner

Creekman

Carp will work just fine, you might want to add some veg oil for the right consistency(sp?)
