Rotten egg lure formulas were a staple lure of the 1920's and 30's fox trappers and i'm sure they caught a train load of fur before better ideas were discovered. Generally speaking, old time trappers used whatever was at hand to make a lure so common practice was to use as added ingredients salt as a preservative, asafoedita which could be purchased at the local drug store and honey or anise oil to sweeten up the stink a little. Just a warning for those who don't want skunks to ruin every set or some good advice for skunk trappers, the above formula will call in skunks quickly from every direction. Those skunks noses must be superior to even canines because i'll swear they smell a dab of rotten egg and asafoedita for at least a mile. Same goes for Synthetic Rotten Egg (SFE), back when it was the rave I experimented with SFE formulas and added it to existing formulas. I never would have believed how many skunks could exist in one area until I tried that out. Other testers I had helping me out reported the same results. Ace

Ok, I like the idea of rotten eggs and all. The asafoedita, tell me how to mix whatever portions I need to be close. (1 doz eggs, and ??? asafoedita.) I have a few skunky areas I need to clear out.

Contender: The amount of asafoedita added to a lure base for skunks wouldn't be critical like it might be with canines and cats. Just as a rule of thumb I would guess two ozs of asafoedita powder per gallon of rotten eggs would be about the proper amount for a skunk lure. After adding the preservative and other ingredients one would have to let the formula age a couple of months to get the full benefit of the asafoedita permeating the egg base and allowing the asafoedita to release it full potential. Any sweet odor added like honey would just be subtle to give the concoction a slightly sweet odor. A heaping cup of pickling salt would probably be enough to keep the eggs from rotting down farther and also serve as an anti-freeze in moderately cold weather. Ace

Mike - Thanks. White musk is also refered to as Xylol musk correct? I believe I have some around here. You ever use Westchester Wildlifes "banana blast" for skunks? Works great in domestic settings. Another couple good ones are Bob Jameson's "skunk mate" and a liquid grub one that I can't recall who makes it off the top of my head. Asa - I looked at what I have on hand and find I only have tinctured asafoetida. Would it be better to use it in pure form? Or if I just make a batch for skunks would the tincture be alright? The tincture I have smells very mild. What approximate ratio would you reccomend for fox/predators? Whether it be pure or tinctured? Thanks again for your time! It's appreciated!

I would double or triple the amount of tinctured asafoedita over the powder.
When making canine lure I would prpbably use only half the amount of asafoedita that I would put in skunk lure. Ace

Hey possum skinner Never used any other manufacture lure for skunks before ...but ,, you gave me an idea to try and add some banana extract to my next egg batch ,I have use banana extract and banana peals with some success on skunks in the past will be doing some egg bait batches later this summer for canines ,, lets compare notes on results .next season .. the eggs I am useing are pheasant eggs that were dirty and did not think would have a good hatch rate in the incubator also been saving the ones that have not hatched that partially developed and have been in 99 1/2 degrees for 24 days GOOD AND RIPE You going to the SE NTA in newport this weekend ???

Asa do you have the same results with egg shells? I was thinking of saving a few shells to add eye appeal to some k9 or mink sets.

If one were to use egg shells or any visible bait as eye appeal here in my area they would have sets full of ravens, crows, eagles and turkey vultures. I have never found a need for that sort of added eye appeal, only making sets where they are visible from reasonable distance. Canine and bobcat hole type sets are made with a hump or visible object for a backing and made in moss, short grass, pine needles, etc so their is nothing in the way to hamper the animal's view with the hole facing the likely anticipated approach of the animal. If they are good and stinky now its time to add the salt or preservative and mix it in good. It would probably take a week or ten days to stop them from working completly even with the preservative added so they wouldn't blow up the jar if the cap were put on tight. Add the desired ingedients and let age in a cool dark place with the cap on loosley. Ace

'Skinner, I got a batch of my own brewing. But I used the shells. Have had them in a cleaned jar for two years now. Keep on throwing more in after each egg breakfast. Very different odor from last year to now. Figured on playing around with some "attractors" and this is a very simple way of doing it.
Scoop full of this mix in a deep dirthole should throw the coyotes a curve. lol I could see putting yours in a squirt bottle ...quick squirt and go..no mess.
