what purpose does that small spring have? Is that the kill feature? I'm referring to the picture posted by MNCedar above my post... Here is a correct micro lock snare. The small hole must ride on the cable in order to actually perform as a lock...with the slot holding the tail of the snare (stop end). Look back at my post earlier on this thread, I think I put a pic on showing how to "start" the lock... with the lock "pointing" down put the free end through the slot, then back around through the small hole. A snare loaded incorrectly will twist and look funky. I hammer my ferrules. After doing a few, you'll kinda get a feel for it. After a couple good cracks with a hammer, they get to a point where you really gotta wail on 'em to smash them any farther. Maybe somebody will chime in and explain it better. What purpose does that small spring have? I've never snared before, so it's unique to me. That is a whammy. It's called a twist on because you can actually put it on after you have made the snare. Which is helpful when you forget to put a whammy on sometimes It does not spring at all. Right now I much rather use the neoprene whammy's because it is much easier to get in the right position than the twist on IMO. But from what I hear, in the winter time when it is freezing the neoprene/rubber doesn't stretch as well. Because well, it is frozen. I have yet to try the pigtailed metal ones though. They are next on my list.

Diamond, how long are those stakes? It is 24" and a little too short, I like them about 30" and I went to using 2x2's seem to stick together better when I am putting them in. and I feel a little better with the extra 5-6 inches in the ground.

that little spring is just a support for holding the snare up a kill spring is connected to the cam or lock itself i believe if im correct or making sense. i dont have a picture or i would post it.

So the "whammy" keeps the snare horizontal? Instead of the loop drooping, it holds it in the trail?

So the "whammy" keeps the snare horizontal? Instead of the loop drooping, it holds it in the trail? More like vertical, but I think you get the point It helps to get the snare in the position you want it, and hold it there.

I decided to take some pictures of my snares tonight. Here's the starting materials. 30 inch strand of 7x7 1/16 cable with a micro lock. Here's where the deer stop needs to be. This is a finished snare. No it's not the same one. This one has a slim lock , neoprene whammy, and 11 ga. swivel.

London, I don't like them. I like the fact that they are adjustable. Do they work? Yes. But for ME, they are a pain in the butt to get right, I'm sure others are better at it than I am though.
I don't really know if it's neoprene, I'm assuming it is. It's pretty much just rubber. I got them off of some Thompson snares I bought last year at the NTA. I like them a lot. I haven't tried the metal ones yet. The Thompson company calls them neoprene support collars. So I guess they are.
LT, what do you mean by tie off? The stake? Cable extensions?

I just put the stake right through that swivel normally. Unless I hook it to wire with a C clip.

I can't think of what they are called. But I thought it was C clip. Seems like I'm making up names here lol, c clip , neoprene. It is the shape of a C and you put it through the loop or something similar and shut it by spinning...... A quick link that's what they are called.

I want to build some beaver snares this year, just six and I have acouple questions. 1. I'm planning on drowning the beaver so how long does the cable need to be? 2. Do I need to load the cable for beaver? Thanks.
