Coyote in a culvert story in a nutshell:

So this radio collard coyote runs into a 30 inch culvert. For whatever reason the culvert is closed at the other end. This coyote needs to be collected for some kind of study. Any volunteers?

Yup! Some brave(?) soul takes a snare pole and goes in after the coyote. After a while someone yells into the culvert 'How close are you?'. 'About ten feet' is the reply. Some time latter our hero responds again 'About ten feet'. This goes on two or three more times until finally the coyote reaches the end of the 50 foot pipe.

At this point the volunteer inches closer and closer to the coyote; 'How close are you?', ten feet, eight feet, six feet, four feet. A comotion is heard inside the culvert. 'Whats going on, did you get him?' No reply. After a moment 'Where's the coyote, did you get him? Volunteer replies, 'He's coming your way!'

It is a tight fit, but you can stuff a live coyote into a Hava-junk 1079. He doesn't have much wiggle room in there though.

You would probobly have better luck dropping an anvil off a cliff. It seems to work every time on T.V.

Yes they will fit, and yes it is a tight fit.

Imagine my neighbors suprise when he rounded the corner of my house to say hello last winter, (he was curious of the contraption I was making) and stopped standing next to two of them in coon size cage traps when one of them growled! he jumped looked down and saw what it was and jumped again! I nearly wet myself in laughter. This is one of the biggest and strongest men I have ever met.

I explained to him that I was building a cage to put on my truck that would hold coyotes. You see in the transition from employee to owner, I fed the kids last winter on live coyotes. Or maybe I should sa the money from selling live coyotes. the other would not be very tasty.

They were alot of fun, but so too were the reactions from the people who have these conotations about coyotes being so mean and nasty. To say the least, I learned alot, and wish I had taken more pictures because of the interest that it has generated (or disbelief), but I did get a few.

One memorable interaction was a woman who got to pet one of them as I was getting back to my truck. Her boyfriend was chicken and I felt sorry for him.

I was parked in a pretty public area and tried very hard to get in and out without being seen. But one morning while I was carrying two live coyotes over my shoulders back to the truck, this couple came a walking around the corner and there we were. I pulled my sets from there the next morning before daylight.

What I learned from the coyotes last winter was that they are actually very timid, docile creatures for the most part... but you do not want to turn your back on them any more then sticking your hand in a cage trap to grab a live badger. but that is a story for another day....LOL

I wouldnt let anyone pet a live coyote on my truck. Im pretty sure you didnt tell them to either.Sounds like they just did it. With my luck they would get bit and Id get sued. Its a wild animal, not a circus show.

Take an aggressive coyote in a trap or snare, as Barkstone says, get a hogsnare (or catchpole as some call it) around them and most are still fighting and growling....but once you get a good grab on them, almost all will cower down like a whipped pup! Done it lots and so has every other "live coyote" trapper. I have handled many and stuffed them in coon cage traps without so much as a whimper! \:\)

Thats US Lt., We get bit more often than normal people, and laugh it off. Would YOU tell someone its alright to pet a live coyote in a cage on the truck you are driving? You dont even need to respond to that, Im sure the answer is no. Heck, Ive fed them cheese slices while they were in the cage and they took it as gentle as my dog. But my buddy was feeding crackers to a wolf 30 years ago at the zoo and lost 2 fingers at the knuckle!

The coyote in question was not in a trap at the time I was holding it and it was muzzzled so that it could not bite anything. You are right handling wild animals is not a circus show and anyone that sticks a finger in a cage with a wild animal should be prepared to be called stubby.

Last night I got a call from a lady who had a raccoon get into her home from the fireplace. It was 3:30 AM. I told her what I would charge and she agreed, so I headed out. Got there, called her and talked her throught coming down stairs and opening the door for me. She stayed out while I searched. I asked about the back door in case I needed to just chase it out. She told me where the keys were. I headed in and inspected the first floor (she said she was certain it was not on the second floor, but I checked up there later to be sure no more were there). I saw where it had done it's business in the diningroom and knocked plates off the china cabinet (amazingly none broke!). Walked into the kitchen from the dining room and could not find the light, but didn't think it mattered with the mag light. I stood in the portal between the diningroom and kitchen, unlatched the bolt on the back door, went over and got the key from the counter and unlocked the deadbolt. Used the light to look everywhere I could see in the kitchen from that portal between the diningroom and kitchen. Looked behind an under stove, fridge, then looked above everything, behind curtains, etc... walked through the kitchen into a hall, checked the bathroom, then into the familyroom where the fireplace was. searched there. Figured he had gone back into the chimney, but hoped he had not. I went back into the dining room and started getting thorough. Looking under the apolstered chairs, up under the table (it had lots of wood curves in the suports), walked into the kitchen and stood in the portal again looking around... searched the entire floor that second time. My third time around, I was geting frustrated. I stood in the portal to the kitchen again and I just knew he was in there for some reason, so I decided to walk over to the other exit and start from that direction. I turned around and laughed. He was hanging onto the trim of the portal I had been standing in those three times, 2 feet from my head! LOL. I snagged him with the pole and put him in a cage. Fixed the flu in the fireplace and searched the rest of the house. I remember I kept telling myself to think 3-d, look up... I did except in that one spot... Figures.

Did a bat inspection on an old courthouse/county jail (circa 1860) yesterday. On my first pass through the old cell block I noticed a large eyebolt in the ceiling. Thought it odd but shrugged it off. On my second pass noted a steel door in the floor. On further inspection saw that it was two doors hinged on the sides and split in the middle. Some sort of old dumb waiter maybe. I'm standing on the door when I notice the lever nearby and I think to look up and realize just what the eyebolt was used for.
All that was missing was the rope. LOL

I had a call once where an elderly lady said that she bats inside her living space. When asked about more details, she proceede to tell me that some things were knocked down and she heard things. So I make the trip and she proceeds to give me more "information" these bats had been tormenting her for a couple of weeks. The were stealing her clothes from closet and putting them on the floor, the chewed up a couple of pairs of shoes and what really got her was at nite when she sat in her chair reading a book, they would hide in the plant that was hanging off of her light by her chair and throw dirt and rocks at her.......... we never did find the bats \:\)
