I also wouldn't do it on fresh tar or tar that was recently sealed. This tar is old and I had no problems last year. Just use common sense or you can lay plastic down.

Black plastic would be better, IMO.

you can do this in the oven mid winter if you need too.

go get a bucket of bridge dirt, let it dry till its really dry. lay a tarp out in the kitchen, dump the bucket on it. go get a big $1 turkey disposible pan. add the dirt and wax to the pan. throw it in the oven. when it comes out, dump it in the bucket and start the next batch.

In a pinch have taken galvanized sheet metal, with bricks underneath and put a propane torch under it, just to dry dirt.

I suppose one could also wax it that way...

One thing that only a few trappers use waxed dirt for is spring coyote control trapping, when you get a hugh amount of rain, as this will help keep your trap bed still working and not be stilling in a bowl of mud. Nothing is 100% , mind you and some thought should be given to choosing a spot that is high and that will drain well. Even the best waxed dirt is only able to take so much water...
It is however, a hugh improvement over regular soils.

Any midwest guys input on how effective wax dirt is with our humidity and constant freeze/thaw? I am sure it is better than dry alone, just curious.

Not sure why guys are doing it on tarps and other places where you have to scoop / sweep it up, after LT and others have shown pics of self-contained places to wax they're dirt.

I almost waxed my dry dirt this weekend but thought it could be a tad hotter. Here's a pic from last yr of how I do mine. 2.5 gallons in each tub. Easy to mix without spilling, and light enough to pick up when done and just pour back into you 5 gallon bucket
