I am headed up to the lake this weekend and was wondering how do you make your fish oil? I have ready somewhere that you dice up the fish and put it in a buck with a lid. Then you bury it under ground to keep the flies and such out. Is this what you do? Thanks CoonD

I gut the fish and make sure they are really clean, chop it uo good and put in jars with just enough water to cover the fish. Put lids on the jars so they are tight enough to keep out flies and maggots but will also let gasses escape. Place in a really sunny spot so the wind blows the stench toward the neighbor you hate the most.

The hardest part is getting the oil off the top. If you figure that out the rest is easy. It does get stinky tho. ~Dan~

If you do it in a bucket like I explained do you add water to it? If so how much? Thanks CoonD

Five gallon buckets - salt (yes, salt) - and time!

I like to use Atlantic Croakers. Have also used catfish. The croakers are full of oil and work great. The catfish not as oily but good oil. I have a friend that runs commercial crab pots. He ends up with a good number of croakers that get in the pots and end up dead. That's why I like to use croakers.

All I do is wash and gut the fish. Sometimes cut in half. Then just pack them in the buckets layering with salt as I go. Only filling the buckets about 3/4 full. No rank or foul odors as they render. I let them sit in the buckets about a year plus. Probably ready earlier but generally go summer to summer.

The oil is then strained and put into jars. The salted fish is them used in pocket sets etc. The old salt is dumped out in mock salt licks for the deer. Nothing goes to waste.

Has anyone ever used carp for their fish oil? What about crayfish oil? ... just use whole crayfish?

PossomSkinner - Do you burry your buckets, or leave them out in the sun?

Thanks,
Ed

The finer you make the fish, the more surface area you expose so the natural reactions that release the oil will make the process faster than if you just toss the entire fish in.

Not all fish produce alot of oil. Some will yield alot of sludge and very little oil. Carp or suckers do not yield much oil. Most salt water species give a greater percentage of oil. Trout and salmon give a very good grade sun rendered oil. Some of the best.

Grinding the fish will allow a much faster rate of decomposition. I do not salt as the salt will retard the breakdown considerably. You can get your first fish oil drain in a couple of weeks in hot weather with trout or salmon. Other fish will require a longer period.

Large scaled fish take much longer to break down also.

Yeah, that makes sense but the reason for the salt was an accident to begin with! lol

I was just using salt to preserve for later use as bait. The oil came to me by accident. LOL And well, it works. Helps to cut down on that rank fish juice smell too. This is all pure oil, no juice! Saltwater fish are way better to work with in this manner.

I've done carp the same way and have yet to get any oil from it!

Sometimes accidents are good.

MisterEd - I just set my buckets under a lean to. Kind of out of the way but gets plenty warm during the summer!

Fish need direct sun lite or higher temps to break down nicely. Hot steady heat sustained as long as it takes. Bleed oil off frequently as the fish will continue to work and produce more oil more quickly. If you let it all in it will take longer to work out I have found.

Carp, although a good bait, does not yield the best oil. The oil one does get, is very thick. WTA
