I am working to create a detailed curriculum for a trapping class that will be offered in some Alaska School Districts. We currently have a bare bones curriculum however it assumes the instructor will know everything before hand. I am trying to create one that a "newbe" could follow with some help from trappers in the rural villages.

I use to look at the instructions on the traps4kids site however that site is down now. I looked through the archives and could not find detailed plans with photos on how to make a beam.

Does anyone happen to have this info? The plans would have to assume the person is not an expert wood worker.

Thanks in advance for any help

There are a couple of line drawings for wooden beams in this link, with a wide assortment of different beam types - both made from wood and PVC pipe if you haven't seen this yet for your reference:

Fleshing Beams In Review

One only needs a few simple tools to construct an effective wooden beam - dimensioned lumber, a saw, wood plane and sandpaper. If you are reasonably handy yourself, you shouldn't have too much difficulty in developing a lesson plan from the illustrations in that link.

Good luck with your ambitious instructor projects.

on Jonathans post of beams I use 24,25,26 and love the PVC its cheap to make and works better than any wood beam Ive ever used I use 4 inch for everything cept beaver and I use 6 inch on them. I do still have my wood beam but only use it to catch parts around the edges I may have missed and I get that with a cheap single handle flesher.

Beav gave me a half-log from a log cabin. I used a coon board to trace the pattern, roughed out the beam with a chain saw, then used a power planer for the finish. Sandpaper finished the job. It turned out pretty well.
