Ok, who among you who knew Paul's dad personally, ever called him CHARLES ? eek

I recently read a story in a trapping magazine where the writer calls him Charles. I never called him Charles and I knew him well for over 20 years. Everybody I knew that knew him, referred to him as Charlie... wink

To his face I called him Charlie, to others when talking about him I used both Charles and Charlie, depending upon who I was talking to. He was interesting to visit with.

I knew "Charlie" for many years before his passing and we had some good conversations at the conventions and other functions. He and I did a seminar togther many years ago in Pa with a couple of other good trappers. Charlie, Dale Quillen from Md, Neil Olsen from Maine, Bill Geougenour and myself were the instructors.

I met him in 1978. A mutual friend introduced me to him. I called him Mr Dobbins, and he immediately corrected me and asked that I call him Charlie.
I believe it was 1980 at the National FTA convention in Lincoln Ill., that he came to my booth(I was selling snares, lure, and bait)and he sat down with me and we talked for many hours off and on that weekend. He asked if he could try out my bait, lures and snares and I said sure. I"loaned" him some, and he always reported his results. " dont change a thing with your bait", or " your snares are great, here is a pic of some fur I caught in them", or " sorry Steve, but this lure is not up to snuff, you need to work on it to make it better". Always helping me in one form or another.
He showed me a pic of 7 coyotes in traps in one pic that he had caught. I knew then and there i wanted some instruction!
I only got to go out with him for a day before an NTA National in Kansas. But what a day! Best instruction I ever had!
It is hard to believe that was over 30+ years ago. But I remember it like it was yesterday.
Charlie was genuine.

I found out about him from googeling trapping. Read all the stories and and looked at all of the pics of him before ever even thinkin bout the forums. Heck. I even email Paul just to say how much I enjoyed it. (That was way before I joined the site, or read the forums)

I really think it motivated me to do more trapping.

Wish was around to have met him.

Good site dedicated to such a man, that we can all learn from.

I like to think that many a new trapper has found this site (like me), and learned enough to keep the tradition going.

Good job Paul, and it shows the upbringing that "Charles" or "Charlie" instilled in his children.

Unfortunately, I never got to meet him personally. Although, when you watch his videos, you feel like you know him personally. A couple of the stories that Paul has on this site...makes you feel like you know the family personally also...OH....and I DO have one of his traps!

I also would have been honored to meet him. He seems to have been a great man. If you check the Archives, there is a history posted about this site, and you can really grasp the way Mr. Charles felt towards folks. He is indirectly responsible for me getting into trapping. Thank you, Mr. Charles Dobbins.

"For those of you that didn't meet him swing by pauls booth sometime at a convention, the apple didn't fall far from the tree." Cotton Mouth Jack statement.

I hate to agee with the movie star, but much of what he said here is very true, however I doubt seriously that Charlie ever caught a wallet, and he was always too nice to assign unearned nick names to other poor defensless trappers!

I met Mr. Dobbins at the 1987 National Trappers Convention in Mansfield, Ohio and found him to be a kind and very knowledgeable person. Exspecially when it came to trap pan modification. He was the best. Later at the convention, I asked him if he wouldn't mind signing my convention program guide. He agreed. I still have it to this day. Yes Charles "Charlie" Dobbins was one in a million and it was a sad day when he passed away.
