Paul, I've heard that this was not necessarily a true cure but more likely a misdiagnosis. Anybody got any real science on this case?

Yes Luke, I was told if you are bitten by a rabid animal, the doctor will make you get a couple more shots just to be sure.

Dave, from everything I've read and been told, the bat was rabid, it did bit her, she did have rabies and she is still suffering residual effects. Doesn't sound like a misdiagnosis to me.

That's what I thought. Is there any other vacines you can get that protect you against furbearer related diseases? Also, is the rabbies vacine at all dangerous?

Don't know of any other vaccines specifically targeted to wildlife diseases or zoonoses but definitely keep your tetanus up to date and if your dealing with wildlife in the third world there are a whole slough of shots you need.
Also be aware that there are other diseases that don't have vaccines that you may contract such as hanta from rodents or typhus from flying squirrel fleas. Not to turn you into a hypochondriac but learn the symptoms to know what to watch for and the protocol for treatment because odds are most MDs have never seen these diseases and may stand around winding their watches until you point them in the right direction.

BTW, isn't there a vaccine now for lyme? I know there is one for canines.

Luke. forget the stories. The pre-exposure needle was so small I could hardly see it. When the nurse said "You're done"; I said "Wadaya mean I'm done? I didn't feel nuthin."

Most people that die of rabies never recall ever being bitten by an animal.

That's because most of them weren't. It is transmitted through saliva but a bit is not required.

Rabid horses used to be the #1 way to get rabies in the 1800's. They say Edgar Allen Poe probably died of rabies. He probably contracted it by having a carriage horse nibble on his sleeve or something. If you wipe your nose or eyes with your sleeve you're done for.

If you get exposed to rabies in a non-bite scenario by the time you show any symptoms you're a gonner. You can't just wait for a bite and go to the hospital. Don't count on that.
