Been making it on the fly....

Straight off the gopher mounds.

Dry it on poly on the trailer. Then sift onto black plastic on table.

Been really cloudy here the past few days, so I got inventive over the weekend.

I have an old apartment size stove in my shop and we basically only use the top burners in hunting season Never use the oven part.

Tryed my hand at using it to make some waxed dirt on Saturday. Worked really well. Used the broiler setting. Did about 10 gallon in an hour. put dirt in one of those aluminum foil roasting pans waxed like normal and in a minute or two ... waxed dirt. mixed it in the pan to be sure it was thru evenly then spread on a tarp to cool. Repeated with the next pan till done.

I know this thread is mainly about making it with the sun... but figured I'd post how it turned out in case anyone else may be in a pinch and need some quick sometime.

Have used ant hill dirt for years. Still not as good as waxed dirt. I gather my ant hill dirt very fast from the same locations year after year. I feel the dead ants even somehow create interest in the set location. I spread some all over the location.

I found that if I pre-sift my dirt with small window screen and melt the the wax in a cup and dump it evenly around on the dirt once it's spread out that the sun melts it into the dirt alot faster than when it's still in the flake or granule stage. Then I use a rake and comb through it several times throughout the day so it's melted in evenly. This works best for me. The window screen keeps out bigger clods and rocks to making the dirt consistently even and fine and looks great with the wax in it.

Does some granulated wax have a higher melting point? I have tried several times to get my wax to melt in the sun when the temps were 100 degrees. Should I be covering the wax/dirt mix with something?

I think I am going to go with the cement mixer method. I have a small mixer just have to come up with a safe heat source.

You should have the sun hot enough in Montana in August for sure!

Where'd you buy your wax from ?

I try not to complicate things. 89deg here today. Pour your sifted dirt on your tar driveway. Let it dry. Add your wax. Stir it in as it melts. Sweep it up after sunset.

Don't you worry about vehicle emission residue, Oil, Gas and any other contaminates found on driveways contaminating your waxed dirt? Seems there are a lot of unnatural odors found on driveways?

No it hasn't been a problem. My cars are parked in the garage not dripping oil on the driveway. If they were I could see where it would be a problem.
