I have a necker 600 fleshing knife that is beginning to get quite dull on the sharp side. How do you guys sharpen your knifes and how do you touch up the edge from time to time to keep it sharp?

Do you sharpen yourselves or do you send them out to someone? I have 3 that could use some work.

do you just draw the knife across it like a regular blade? I can't see how that works seeing as the knife is only tapered on one side of the blade.

Anyone else use any other methods?

Neil

Stone works for me too when it gets real dull. Several passes on the main bevel and then a swipe or two on the back side to knock the burr off.

ice auger blades are only sharpened on one side too....I just picked up a scotty hand drawn ice auger blade sharpener $15 works great but you only need it once in a while ..the back of a knife keeps it touched up inbetween...

I never work the beveled side of my necker. All my sharping Is done on the back side. And all I do Is pass a very hard piece of steel across the back side.
The burr that Is created by this action Is what does the cutting and gives you that sharp edge.

That's all I do as well. I've had my necker for over a decade and a few swipes with the back side of a knife every now and than has kept it razor sharp.

thanks guys, makes sense to me....do you think I would have to work the sharp side now to get the edge back or do you think I can just work on the backside and get rid of the burr?

I use TONY'S sharpener. Trapper Art carries them. They have a slot of a reg. knife and a sissor slot that fits a necker just perfect. If you want a truely razzor sharp knife go with the TONY's. I do steel with the back of the knife but to actually sharpen one I use a sharpener not a steel.
