I have used a mix of poplar oil and maple extract from the spice rack at the grocery store. I dont know if the maple helps attract them, since beaver don't eat maple bark, but it makes it a little louder. Might be more of a curiosity lure, but it works in mid winter.

Earl just informed me they will eat maples. Now that I think of it I did see a small maple tree that was beaver chewed, but I assumed it was for dam building and not food.
I stand corrected. Thanks Earl.

Around here they took a liking to sweetgum. Finished up a nuisance job a while back that was all about beavers making a mess of a stand of sweetgums that were about to be timbered.
Personally, I think a beaver will adapt to just about whatever food source is easy and sometimes not so easily obtainable. Regardless of how goofy it may be!

Dobbins Woodchipper is a great food lure. I've had it work when they wouldn't go near anything castor-based.

Clint Locklear has one called "Beaver Buffet". I've caught beaver on it especially this time of year through the summer on Nuisance work. I'm sure Bogmasters is a quality lure as well, although I've not used it yet. Woodchipper is an excelent food lure.........my favorite.

Actually Asa's beaver all call is a superb lure.It doesn't seem to have the overpowering castor smell too it, and it has somewhat of a sweet smell-not sure if it is a mint of somesort or what, but the beavers really like it. The base seems to be vaseline or something of the sort, I really like how it works. A great lure. WTA

Possum skinner and Whitetailaddict: Thanks for your comments concerning the quality of Beaver Super All Call, I appreciate them! My Dad's idea of the best possible lures was to combine everything in a lure for all animal species that would appeal to all known calls of the animal, thus the name "All Call" was coined. The Beaver lure falls in to this catagory as well as other species lure being both a combined gland and food lure along with some other secret calling attractors. Ace

If I understood it right( and sometimes I don't) Aspen Spice is a food lure that contains Aspen and Popular bud oils along with the cambium( the green under bark) and several other essential oils. It does not contain any castor, although the guy/company that made it( now deceased) also made a castor based lure that contained nutmeg, cloves, and cinammon included in his castor based formula. (said to have been a two old century formula that was used by many mountain men including Jim Bridger). I have used both lures and have taken beaver on both and I'm not the greatest beaver trapper but I catch my share. I think I still have some in a glass pint mason jar, which was how you bought it in the early 90's. Being that I have been around a lot of lures and knew many of the old time lure makers, including the late Fuller Laugerman, Dave Edwards, Michael Stecknicki and Charles or (Charlie as most of us called him) Dobbins just to name a few, I have a greater understanding of how lures are formulated than the average trapper. I still produce the (grey) "old catfish oil" the way Hawbakers used to make it, which was the same oil that the late Bill Nelson wrote of for his famed "Powder River Bait Solution". Many people don't even remember Hawbaker even making a catfish oil but they did. I have two of the original bottles. I have also learned and produce trout oil which I learned from the infamous "TB" , who produced the best if not all the trout oil sold in the US at one time. His products were sold and/or marketed by the best in the business including O'Gormans. I still am probably the only producer of sun rendered chicken oil because 1) it takes 3 years to get good oil 2)I had an unlimited access to chicken and 3) no body wanted the job! Many people have tried it in their bait or lure formulas as it was an old time lure base. When they speak of "bird fat" in a lure base, well that bird is a chicken. I have sold a lot of pints, quarts and in some cases gallons to regular trappers, all who have said it caught a lot of fur just used as is. It also is the base for my food scent "Montana Cold Roller" used by some very successful trappers. I don't advertise lures because I can't supply the trapping public. I do make and sell some though and some of the stuff I produce is private labeled. That's show biz I guess. My full time as a "squirrel trapper" keeps me busy enough!

Yes Lt Grey, cinammon or actually oil of cassia is an old time beaver lure attractor. Where the idea comes from is that Beavers in Asia favor the cassia tree just like they do poplar in North America. Even though a North American beaver has never smelled a cassia tree, the odor still attracts them through instinct. Ace

Tom Tom - I had always heard Bob Wilsons green beaver contained a small percentage of castor? But I can't/won't argue that point with ya, 'cept if'n I'm right I win a gallon of your mound master! LOL Would that common household item be turpentine? Or was it ever disclosed?

Our "Ten Mile" beaver lure is a combo food ,curosity, a subltle amount of castor and mildly scented with sac oil. It is a good blend and works summer, spring and winter.
The first initial odor push is of a food attraction nature. But the more you smell it the other odors are mildly identifiable.I rarely have to use something else. But everyone runs onto an educated beaver if he traps them long enough. Then I will use something different or set differently or both.
Beaver can become quite avoiding of strong castor based products in time. Especially in pressure areas and those that have had that dreaded toe or belly pinch experience. Their ability to associate some odors, presentations and configurations at times is amazing.
No odor set ups or just eye appeal then may be the best until they completely avoid that vicinity, then it is on to another game plan.
