I'm real HIGH TECH

lets see, my method and operation consist of small stainless steel bowls for my parts ... I use a swagger and prefer to sit instead of kneeling

also my swagger doubles as a j hook closing tool ... works very well with little effort

nothing I do is too HIGH TECH ... but a few things I choose to do help me do what I'm doing just a lil easier and be somewhat efficient

forgot to include a response to your question in my last reply ... NO you do not need a crimping tool/swagger ... many folks use a hammer to flatten them

Do you use F1 to whiten your snares?

I was talking with a trapper who's on this forum...and since I don't have his permission to quote him, I will not say his name, but...he brought up a very valuable point!

He said, that he was not a store keeper, he was a trapper who had a supply store...AND THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE!

When you are a trapper/snareman 1st, then making snares and selling supplies becomes secondary!

I sell the same snares I make for myself.
Anyone can make snares, but some prefer to buy them, as they don't want to mess with it, don't have the time or like the convience!

I can understand why someone would buy from someone that actually uses their stuff they sell.

You know what I like about your way of doing things LT is the fact that anybody wanting to get into making their own snares can relate to the basics tools required of doing so.

Some of us don't need all the fancy stuff or worrying about whether we're doing it in a efficient manner to match the pros.

You go out of your way to present information for everyone to learn from your experience and I am sure there's a lot of people on here that appreciates that.

Alright, Lets get back to the title of the thread! Anybody else got some input on how YOU make snares?

I make mine about the same as LT, but I use a homemade crimper instead of hammering them on. I used to hammer on all of my stops and double ferrules until I broke my boltcutters and being the cheap sob that I am I ground out the jaws and made my homemade crimpers. They work, but if it comes down to it and they aren't handy than the hammer will get the job done. And thanks LT and possum skinner, I've learned from both of you.

some guys have gone to using "presses" to flatten ferrules or crush their nuts (lol not what you're thinking ) aint really sure if I could get into this method or not? can't really say, as I aint used such a contraption

now if it was a choice only between using just a hammer and the press ... high tech, middle tech or low tech whatever it would be considered I would most likely opt for the press ... reasons being it is no doubt much much quieter, consistent, smoother and probably more so effortless and least but not least it can be mounted to a bench etc. where the use of a leaning stool or chair could be used

even if I chose the old faithful hunk of steel and a hammer (and yes, I hammered a many a ferrule before switching to a swagger) , me personally would place it on a bench to eliminate the need to kneel ... especially when/if making many dozen snares ... reckon that's just me ... wouldn't hurt to invest in good hearing protecton also when using the hammer method, as the long term repeated "pinging" isn't exactly good for your ears and ya only get two in a lifetime

What is your technique for getting such a pretty bend in the lock end of your cable?

needle nose pliers and a roll/twist/bend ... slightly over bending to allow it to "spring" right to where you want it

Needle nose pliers are what I use also. I like the crooked,(bent) ones best...I use them in the summer to remove fish hooks...Well, not the same pair...
