Well, I don't know if I made it right but we'll give it a try. This is my spring, for my home. It's a good spot the fox. They go under the cattle fence below the spring, you may see in pic. In the pic you see the overflow into the tub for cattle we had years ago. The water never freeze up that close to the tub. I made the water hole two months ago so fox would get use to it. It about 36" to 40" round, 3" deep. Stone with moss on in middle with lure. The grass sod is on the trap pan with a 5' chain and two point drag. May be overkill but the trap is a Sleepy Creek #4 O/S set with 2 lbs.
Let me know your opinion what I could have done different or better, other than waste my time. LOL
The set was out of Stanely Hawbakers, Trapping North American Furbearers.

That setup should work as long as the fox are interested.

wow i seen the same set in a book i got that is very old. If it was successful then, it should work now. good luck

i would think a #4 is a little big for fox but idk about them yankee foxes

looks good but if you are using a #4 for a fox I wouldn't want to mess with it . That fox must be a Godzilla Fox. You must grow em big at your place.

Nice looking set.I used to catch fisher with that set years ago.

I know a 4 is on the big size but the sod is about 1" high over the pan, so I went with a 4 to try to get the foot.

I have knocked almost all the dirt off the sod /grass and tore the grass down to make it shorter it might be because I mostly have grey fox but I run the stepping sod /trap pretty close to the shore 3-4 " good luck

You probably didn't need to use that big of a trap. From my experience, If you connect it will be a high catch regardless. They can't "tender foot" at that set. Once they commit to making that step, ALL of their weight is coming down on that pan. They can't even back off of they felt pan creep.

Maybe the next set should be a #3 ?

I've used these sets a lot. That one looks good. Hard to tell from the pics, but if I were to change anything, I might have the whole setup closer to shore. Especially the trap, so it's an easy step for a fox. Johnny Thorpe talks about making his so that from the shore to your bait rock is the width of your hand. And if you use a chunk of meat for bait, cover it with some wet leaves.

cool looking set.what is the draw to get the fox on the pan.is there some kind of bait or lure your using. or are you trying to catch them when they come for a drink.

The Stone with moss on in the middle of the puddle has lure/bait on. For the fox to get a good noise full of it or taste, it hopefully will step on the sod to reach it.

yeah thats what we call a spring hole set

I used it successfully this fall and I used a 1 1/2 coil only and had a nice pad catch.
