Wondering what you all would or do use for a beaver food lure base. I have a couple of ideas. Just trying to figure out what would hold it all together, and really exhibit the added ingredients. Thanks WTA

Try some Poplar oil as the food for northern beaver. The Gum tree is more eaten by southern beaver. Then add some castor and something for a base. Put a little preservative in it.
Just my $.02. Or buy some Bob Wilsons Beaver food lure. The beaver will like it. The F & T trading post sells it.

Good luck.

I don't want any castor. People around here use it way too much, educates a lot of beaver. I want to make something which is a pure food lure. WTA

I think one of the bosses beaver lures is a food-based lure. I'm sure that there are several others out there too. I realize you want to make your own, but there is no better way to learn about the ingredients then by buying several that already have their own recipe figured out. Not to be a smart-aleck, but it might make the learning curve less steep. Just a thought.

I know, I already use the best. But that doesn't tell me what the base is. I don't specifically want to know what is in Woodchipper or the others. That is there secret. I just want some options, to try and tinker with my own stuff. thanks WTA

Glycerin oil makes a pretty good base for oils to be blended with.

I developed a strictly beaver food lure several years ago for exactly the same reason. I do not reccomend mixing food ingredients with castor odors in the same lure. Yes many lures contain food and castor and have caught beaver but when dealing with educated beavs trying to induce two different reactions in one lure (food and territorial) can cause a confusion response and set avoidance. Beaver dont naturally encounter food odors at castor mounds nor do they find much castor smell around food sources. Bob Wilson's lure is not strictly a food lure because there is some castor in the formula but the castor is minimul with the food being dominant. With the castor odor so small it would seldom cause a confusion response that is why it is such a productive lure.

Sorry, I didnt answer your question. Finely ground corn cobs make a base that will absorb and hold odors for an extremely long time. This is the same substance that car fresheners are made of. Just make sure it has absolutely no water content or your oil base inredients will seperate in the lure and decrease the consistancy of the odor released.

I make and use a "home brew" beaver food lure. All ingredients are beaver food related. Really good results year round.

Here's my base ingredient. Don't ask 'cause I aint gonna give out anymore info! This blind hog stumbled across this blend and I am still keeping it to myself. LOL

Butch- tell me what it is and what if anything it came out of , then where can I get it in bulk. Because if you really know what it is, it doesn't come easy! Definitely not in bulk. \:D

Have at it...

coonduke writes...I would be interested to hear how luremakers preserve herbs and vegatable matter for use as a base in beaver food lures.

I use only distilled oils, tinctured materials and dried powders which need no preserving. Ace

Looks like it was taken a little further down the line like from the colon but then it would have had to have eaten a weird diet like granola or trail mix or pie filling.Pretty mysterious stuff.

One might try apple butter, prune or peach butter as suitable base materials. That would give you a couple of slightly different odor bases to work with your active ingredient
choice(s). These bases can be thickened or thinned to meet your specifications of viscosity consistency.
