Just thought I would stop by again to see what trips other folk's triggers on their #110's before this thread dissolves to the back pages and gets lost in the drift.

ive used it with some success with 120's
they fire faster so less misses

also (not to hijack) if I put a little muskrat fur and meat on the trigger do you think I could pick up a mink?

I much prefer the foam, light weight and stays white forever.

The foam last longer, cause I always get hungry when I'm using carrots. One spring off of the old style 220 covers a lot more water when they fire for captures.

I have tried everything under the sun with apples on the trigger! Half out all out all under so on. I personally have yet to take one muskrat with the set! I did however have some deer walk my creek and destroyed every single set trying to get at the apples!

On under ice sets...it shouldn't be a problem. However, I find on under ice sets when apples are used for bait they turn to mush...I use carrots or parsnips and have never experimented with styrofoam or strips of plastic.

In open water whenever I tried baiting a 110 I found 50% or greater sprung traps...

...I suggest a baited 160 if you want to go that route...you won't miss.

I have experimented with this very idea this fall but did not take pictures.
I tried setting some ponds with muskrats using carrots on the trigger at water line level and a touch of various lures.
Absolutely no takers over 2 weeks.
I then took some parsnip and put it on 110 triggers about 12 -18" under water in the deeper water between feeder huts and land.
3 feeder huts and 8 traps set. 3 muskrats and 3 tripped traps. 2 untouched.
Traps were left to sit one week while I was deer hunting.
Water was open when I set but had 3/4" to 1" ice when I returned.
Overall I think it was a success and deserves soem tweeking to improve.
One thing I noticed was to anchor traps so that when a trap fires with a catch that the rat cannot float to the top and get caught in the ice.

I tried apples and carrots in ponds and creeks this year and still have yet to take a rat.... I will try the foam and parsnips and see if I do better.

Thanks

Probably depends on the location, but corn works great for rats around here... I use about a 2 to 3 inch section of an ear of corn, impale it on the trigger and set it. I catch more rats that way than any other. All my sets are below water with the 110s, I've also shucked corn on the bank and place a foothold coming out of the water with a drowning set. This will catch you some coons too.

bmead, I am using them under the ice. With 110's I average 50% or more misses, with 160,s I average 30% misses

I don't like to use corn on triggers because you can catch ducks.I use apples and carrots under ice.
There is a lake we trap that the water level is adjusted with a dam.The water level changes so often, that one day what was under water is above water the next, putting ducks at risk.

Having once had a large supply of golfballs some with muskrat chews already on them. I thought I would go for color and durability when I tried golfballs on 110 triggers under the ice. I used standard white, lime green, hot pink and orange. Sadly not one trap caught a rat. That is not to say that it would not work, it just did not work where I tried it. Maybe in a place with higher rat population it would work. Or maybe in the ponds on the golf course where the balls came from. Who knows but it would have been neat if it worked.

Caught 3 rats with this set on open water. I like to put conibear on a tall stick an put the conibear so the bait is at the water line. Might have caught more 'rats if there had been more in that area. Baited Coni's in runs work fantastically. Watch the current as it may set off your traps.

I have used apple under water but the I figured out they cannt smell underwater so I put pieces of wood painter red and white on the trigger.
