I use "pinky to thumb" distance for fox height. Add 4" to that for Lynx. As for size: bigger than their head.

8-10" loop, with bottom of the loop about the same ht.

When cats are hunting hares in the willows, their heads are lower than you might think.

I have caught cats in rabbit snares a few times...

Okay, I got the 8-10" loop and 8-10" off the ground set...what about the cable size and length in relation to 'fur damage'?

IMO 6-8" loop size for lynx. I find to many hip catches with lynx jumping thru a 10" loop. Maybe Alaskan lynx are larger than BC lynx?

I use a 10 inch loop and have not had that many hip catches as long as I set it 1inches or so inches with a chin up stick.

10 inch loop and make sure it's high off the ground. I would guess that the bottom loop of some of ours are nearly a foot off the snow. Zero hip catches.

Kusko is right on, however, I would go to a 9 in. loop. I began my lynx snaring experience with 10 and 10. Got hip catches and occaissional fox catches. Our esteemed member, Northern Bushman, (where is that guy anyway) told me 9 in. loop, 11 in. off the ground. That reduced hip and non target catches. I now make my lynx snares to open to 9 in.
Cable size is 1/16th, and I prefer 1x19 cable. One thing you don't want is to catch a wolverine in your lynx snare. He'll leave with the snare still around his neck, likely. The 11 in. figure will help with that and may also cause you to miss some kittens. Save the kittens for next year.
