Not sure on that but I did show Clint Locklear my wet weather set dirthole using a "snake gourd" cut in half, ( you only want the last 8" or so) and inserted into a dirthole.
The things is, if it rains, you just pull out the gourd and pour out the water using a strainer and insert it back in the hole.
A grass plug goes into the bottom first, then the bait, the sheep wool. The whole thing insers into a dirthole just 2" deeper than the gourd itself.
I got the idea from Buzzard's "Pepsi can" idea.

Someone asked about drying muskrats.

This tip I got is from (the late) Charlie Dobbins....and that is to wrap the animal in several layers of newspaper. The newspaper will absorb most of the water. Works on mink and also raccoons.

invest in hip boots, the water may only look ankle deep in many places you scout, but come time to lay steel it will be a "little" deeper than your rubber boots. LOL

I use a potato sack to carry my muskrats, that gets them fairly dry by the time I get home with them.

For those of you who like to flag your sets..go to Tractor Supply they have metal wire flags several different colors available 7 bucks for a hundred flags.

Use the new plastic coffee cans with the handle. I put minnows in there and mix my fish oil and minnows together. Makes a quick and easy bait and it even has a lid.

Now that Montana makes the longliner 1.5 coilspring I bought three dozen and took the old chain and J hooks off the Dukes I had to replace them with the machine chain and heavier swivel at the mid chain swivel on the montanas. I am going to use them for fox and it makes a nice short chain for less lunging.

Always stake your coon cubbys down or the coon will tip it over and steal your bait.
On coni's used for cubbys remove the chain. Cut off the ring and put the chain through one of the spring eyes. Add a swivel to the ends of chain and some snare cable (about 40 inches works for me) and a dog lease style snap on the end. Now you can place the cubby next to a small tree stake the outside and attach the trap to the tree with the cable and snap.
Oak lathes cut to fit the 110 trap spring eye and painted orange at the to cut to a point on other end make great rat stakes.
Paint your tools orange or you will always be looking for something. Tomorrow I need to find the hachet that was the only thing that wasn't painted orange !

Great tip.
Many trappers drill a hole and run a T-Bar though!

Orange floresent surveyers tape tied on a tree limb or fence, will help you mark a set at a distance if using binos's to check it. You'd be suprised how sets get lost, when you run a bunch in a hurry!

For those of you who use the retrievable cable stake made by Ron Marsh, try this. I attach a split ring along with a coon tube to the opposite end that you use to pull out of the ground. I sometimes run the end you use to retrieve the cable with and run it thru the split ring and attach it to a small tree, , limb, a crossing log, etc. Works well for me.

LT,
I am just now getting out of the dark ages. Still don't have the equipment to post pics. I can send someone a cellphone pic if they want.

The gourd was a neat idea. I have not grown any, but did catch a grey off of the one LT GREY gave me. In the trapping season i take vitamins and proten shakes because my diet on the road is terrable. Since I saw the gourd, I know take proten in these 4 oz plastic tubs, the protein is in kool-aid form. Now i wash out the tub and fill it with wool/lure or 4 oz bait. The tubs are tuff and have a sealed threaded top. I can beat in a piolt hole and hammer in the tub to ground level. If not catch, pop it out, screw the top on and reuse it.

Back to skinning knives, check out Rada cutlery. They sell all kinds of knives designed for kitchen use, the heavy duty paring is the best skinning knife I've ever used, all stainless and they only cost $4-$5. Also, they sell a sharpener for about 5 bucks, that has holes for bench mounting, and works by pulling your blade between 2 little metal wheels. Literally 5-10 strokes and you're sharp again.

Corn cobs are perfect for holdong a 110 in place on the stake. Pick your depth, then just shove the cob pointed end first UP through the spring eye. Works better than wedges or sticks, they weigh nothing, and are re-useable. Also, carry a sharpie marker, when you flag each rat or mink location, just write down # of each kind of trap, i.e. 110's, &1 1/2, you know at a glance how many of each you're looking for at each location. Probably not adviseable where theft is a problem, though.
