Dad and I are making some concrete drags. The mold. The wire keeps the concrete from chipping. Pouring the concrete. The cylinder mold. Can't wait to see how they turn out!

Those should be fun to haul around! You could use them to dig your dirthole under though.

The rectangular one is 3-5 inches deep, and the cylinder is about a foot deep.

I sure hope you aren't planning on tying off to that wire because them coyotes are gonna be running around the countryside with ankle bracelets. You may as well park your 4 wheeler out there and chain off to it.

The wire is to hold up the chain while the cement dries.

Sorry! See it now? The chain is on the cylinder too, but it is blocked by the rebar.

Not saying there isn't one, but what is the advantage of these over stakes? I really don't know. My dad just got the idea and we were just trying it out. (I'm exepting donations for an excavater. ) Can't wait 'til tomorrow when the cement dries. I predict we'll be callin' the peramedics more than once.

What kind of hole you going to have to dig to bed those suckers?
I can see it for beaver, but not for a coyote set where you have to hide it all.

I made some concrete beaver drowners an easier way to make a cylinder mold is to just use a 5 gallon bucket. I just fold a foot long piece of rebar in half and shove the two ends in then you have an anchor point. when dry just flip the bucket over and tap on the bottom of the bucket and they fall right out

-TJ Would you have to hide it if you left it at a good location all year? Use it as backing for a dirthole or flat set? I'd agree with Drifter on this one, you're thinking much more creatively than 99% of the guys on this forum. You could be coming up with something that works extremely well for you. If it doesn't work what have you lost? An hour or two and a couple of bags of quick-crete? Big deal. Clark

Clark and drifter is right, i agree with them, also you can tote those things to a creek bank make a good pocket and you never ever have to worry about having a place to stake you trap or fix a drowning location, if you loose it at the location, just take a cheap metal detector and find the chain, also you can make some that would resemble a log that is fallen in the woods with a knot hole for future sets just add cement dye, its gonna be a lot of work toting them to your locations, but once there they are their. Good luck

We aren't gonna camoflouge them. We leave them that color so if a yote walks a long way away he'll see it, get curious, walk over to it, and get caught.

I got some of those light weight plastic buckets and used them for forms instead of digging a hole. Put a plastic liner in the bucket first and the finished product will slide out easier.

Well, they need a new name tho. I'd call them "concrete weights" cause nothing short of a mammoth is gonna "drag" that thing anywhere, lol! I think this is a pretty good idea tho. I do have a few suggestions: Beaver: You can scout out your beaver locations ahead of season and go make the weights on-location. Make it a cylinder tho. The reason being for the cylindrical shape is for the ease of getting it out of the ground. (You can use old tin stove pipe for the mold maybe?) Pour it near the bank of the river/stream/pond. Come back later when it's set. Dig around the cylinder, making a sort of ramp for it, and roll it into deep water. Rolling will be much easier than picking it up. I would suggest dying the thing so it doesn't attract human attention. For one, humans will think of concrete in the middle of the woods as a sort of littering. Also, you don't want hikers/hunters/other outdoorsy types investigating your block, trying to figure it out. Make it brown so it's just like a log. Unless you leave it out in the woods/fields for weeks, canines probably won't want to investigate it. They usually hate new things that suddenly appear in their environment. Some of the trappers on here have called it "neophobia," fear of new things. If it seems more natural, they might adjust to it better. Perhaps cover it up with divets of grass? I'm no expert so you might want to consult some K-9 men about that one.

I use logs the same way. I keep out a couple dozen sticks of fire wood from the splitter to use in these giant hay/sod fields. Trap is already fastened to the log and i just drive around, flippin the logs into the feild. Works as a backing, a drag, and eye appeal. After a catch, just move it over a little and reset. Its quicker than staking, quicker to move, and makes it easy to find 20 or so sets in a giant hay or sod feild....shane

why not just use concrete cinder blocks? They're not as heavy, and they don't have chains attached to them. Well, I just checked them, and they're almost dry.

I don't know if you get much snow there or not...but if you do I'd recommend painting one side black. That way you can have that thing really stand out when you want to do some nasty weather trapping. Clark

The rectangular block. It's covered in mud, so it's kinda hard to see. The cylinder. The holes. http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac94/chhtmh/100_1653.jpgSorry the pic wont show up.
