Well I heard they have a good fur price and I've been trying to get them guys but they won't come. Post all you know about skunks and how to trap them how to skin them and also post what kind of set to use with what trap. Also you could post some stories of skunk experiences. That would be really helpful.

What is the least smelly way to dispatch a Skunk in a foot hold trap?
LT GREY, how do you prevent getting sprayed with the open cages?

Good question. Skunks for the most part do NOT want to smell like a skunk! They're body language is easily read, if you know what to look for. Handling skunks without incident, although somewhat of an art, is easily mastered, much of it being confidence! If Vinke ever shows up, perhaps he will post a picture of me holding a skunk up to my face to prove this point. That said, one Sunday morning while at his place, I got careless and ended up leaving my clothes there! I do usually cover skunks up, when I carry them in cage traps, but at times can read a skunk so well, that I know I won't even need one.

Here's a good one for ya'. Year before last, market report said skunks with nice full length stripes were selling for $8-$12 . Well just so happened I caght a pretty nice one, so I put it up. Garage stunk for a year, alot of nontrapping friends questioned my sanity, but hey they're bringing good $$, so away it went to auction......25 cents!!!! Went out and bought myself a gumball! (suppose I'll skin 'em again this year, anyway. Are you supposed to shampoo them or something?!) Never sold any other than that one.

The trick is to kill and skin them without them spraying. I do about 50-70 (or so) every year. I skin them with all 4 feet on, tan them and then sell the hides myself. I make about $8-$10. after tanning. Plus I sell the essence and also the pods after the essence is out and the fat from the hide. I also rot down the carcas' for lure base.

For me. Finding the skunk pole was like finding a thousand pounds of gold. I was sick of shooting them and waisting pelts and essence. This year im saving both. Got an ounce a 1/4 right now. as well as three skunks.(one of them leaked as it was shot) Another thing im thankful for in the skunk trapping world is the mixture of peroxied dawn dish soap and baking soda.

I have used Jameson's and Blackie's as well as my own stuff, It all works! All caught on one nuisance job. I often hang skunks up to air out if they need it. These are the preferred skunks for the tanning market, wide white strips.
