you will likely get all kinds of answers, from none to 4 lbs.

i run around 2-3 when targeting coyotes.

Yup...Wrap some old leather gloves around the handle where the jaws will snap and duct tape them into place. Now you won't mess up your trap when firing it. I use a 3lb and a 4pound hammer set up this way.
Get it to fire between those 2 weights and you are set.
