I leave them in vinegar for 4-5 days then take to the car wash and clean them and they then look like new

Teen Fox,

Vinegar is used in the process of trap preparation for removing excess rust on them before dyeing and waxing them.

This is an example of my own traps that were soaked in a 50:50 vinegar and water solution for a few days to illustrate the results, showing the before and after for contrast.

After this rust removal procedure, I rinse them thoroughly in fresh water from a hose to rid them of the vinegar residue. From there, I set them outside for awhile until they get a thin film of rust on them before I dye them in a boiling solution of either sumac berries or black walnut hulls. After dyeing they are waxed.

This particular process of trap preparation, among several other methods are discussed in detail in this forum's Archives for your reference:

I have a few real old traps that I would like to clean up would this be ok? Maybe I should use a little more water and less tome and keep a eye on them?

Then why are you soaking them in vinegar? I'm puzzled.

Okay, then rinse well and boil. Why no wax at least?

You're not busting up through frozen soil so I'd just go with all #2 music wires.
