I am trapping quite a bit of pigeons and selling them to either a Chinese family, who makes them into pigeon soup or I sell them to a hunter for dog training. However, the job that I am doing wants me to euthanize them onsite, so that they know they are eliminated and do not return. They are asking me how I plan on euthanizing them. Any suggestions?

Hi Paul, I don't want to sound like I'm taking a shot at you or anything, and I certainly don't want to take the pigeon soup off the table of a Chinese family, but it is against Fish and Game code regulations to sell the carcasses of any animals taken under ADC laws. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the case. Sorry, don't have any experience euthanizing pigeons.

In Mo, Pidgeons, (European Rock Doves), are a nuisance animal with no limits or seasons.

Paul,
I have a large igloo cooler with a CO2 talk I use for euthanizing coons etc. for my work, I just place the traps right into the cooler, close the lids tightly and turn on the CO2.
I have never tried pigeons though, but for something you could do on site to satisfy the property owner, get some dry ice & some large lawn & leaf plastic bags that the traps will fit into and seal the traps with the birds up in the bags with the dry ice (or CO2) and put the birds in there and seal it up for a while. That should do the trick.
I hope this will help you.

Been posted before here. Modern car engines with new age fuel's and polution systems don't produce enough CO for efficient dispatch.

Look, who doesn't know that direct pressure between the thumb and index finger on a bird's temple,( both sides) will put it down in 2 seconds flat!

You cant sell them, But the Chinese family and the hunter cant expect you to take your time and gas to deliver the free birds ....... you are entitled compensation at least for your time and gas for delivery. Run it by your Fish and Game people, I feel it is wrong to wast any resources I belive in some states ADC guys sell coons and possom and other states wild pigs are on the menu, For me I recycle everything even mice and squrrils are given to rehab for food, and when that dont workout I put them where fox and other critters will get them. Why waste our resorces if someone or something can make use of it? even the buzzards need to eat.

Big bob when I say co2 I am talking about a co2 chamber used to put animals down. Not some nuckleaded move with a car exhaust. That is just animal abuse.

Stan, I commend you on your stand on utilizing the critters you catch but this is Calif. and we, as a.d.c. guys, have to operate within the law. Except for what the D.F.G. states as edible game(i.e. deer, pigs, bear) everything we catch has to be put down and buried. Also I would think that selling pigeons to dog trainers is just asking for problems. Pigeons do have a tendency to go "home" if they're not killed by the trainer. Not too fair to your costomer.

LT GREY howdy, I dont use gass on anything, Lead, lethal traps or suffocation by water cover about everything for me. And no I would not be interested in eating an animal that had been gassed, as a hunter I know the importance of bleeding out game , I dont know for sure but my gut feeling is if you gass something the blood is going to be trapped in the mussel tissue and spoil the flavor , other than that if the pigeons shot or snap the necks and and the meat is properly handled ,and if someone wants to eat it all the more power to them, if the economy keeps going down hill they may start looking better to all of us. Probtrapper, the retriever guys need the birds dead to teach their dogs to fetch and the pointer guys have a flock of birds that return to the same coop to be used over again. I've sold a lot of pigeons to dog trainers and I don't remember any customers complaining that they came back.
Of course, maybe next time I'll find a nice Asian family; just to be on the safe side!

Paul, selling dead birds to retriver guys I would have no problem with. Here in Calif. by law you can't sell anything you catch doing a.d.c. work. Selling birds to pointer guys, they have to keep them in their coops for at least 3-4 weeks for the birds to reprogram themselves that this is home. But for me anyhow, you almost always seem to catch more birds than the costomer thought was there and by putting them down on site they know they aren't paying for the same birds over and over again. One other thing and this might not be the case in other states but here in Commiefornia if the person you sold live pigeons too got sick from eating them they could, and no doubt would, sue you.

Probtrapper, do you think that eating the absolute filthiest bird that flys, could make you sick?
