Ok Guys,
I realize the sensitive nature of my request and I can asure you any photos provided will never find their way into the wrong hands.

What I'm after is some good photos of wolves in traps both of the wolf showing its size and of their feet in the trap! I need to show the relativity between trap and foot size! Would prefer photos of wolves in MB750, #5 Bridgers or CDRs.

We are at risk of loosing our ability to trap dingoes in Australia! Problem is trappers hear continue to use traps way to large for the animal they are trapping! The traps listed above are among those used for dingoes/wild dogs including the Lane Dog Trap. I don't like getting drawn into this debate but the problem is the powers that be look at the damage caused by the larger traps and paint all traps with the same brush. I've been asked to do a presentation at the upcoming Queensland Pest Animal Symposium and would like to show the correlation between trap and foot size.

I will also look at the benifits of trap modification ie. laminated/offset jaws and the problems associated with padded jaws. Guys if you need more detail or if you have a few photos and wish to send them please contact me E-mail Ed.Carroll@moretonbay.qld.gov.au

Thank you all for your assistance, I sure do appreciate your taking the time!

I've got one of the Lane Dog Traps and it looks to be as large as a #4 1/2 Newhouse. The difference is the way it is built. A wolf would stay in a Lane for only a few minutes before the trap was scrap metal. It is a very fast trap but comparatively weak springs and almost sheet metal jaws. I've used mine for beaver and it works great for them. I'm sure I could catch coyotes and cats in it but the foot damage to a coyote would definitely be unacceptable. I know that a dingo is a strong animal but I believe the Sterling MJ600, the Jake trap, or an MB650 would be the ticket for them. The #5's and #750's would be too big in my opinion. The laminated jaws would also cut down on foot damage. A tricked out #3 Bridger would do fine also I believe. Wolves have BIG feet in relation to body size so a larger jaw spread trap is beneficial in taking them. Dingos have a much smaller foot and a smaller trap would work fine as long as it is strong enough and the jaws won't pop out of the frame.

Also a wolf trap often has to come up through quite a bit of snow making wider jaws beneficial.

OK Ed,I've been trialing all the MB traps except for the 750 which is overkill in this country.
The MB650c cast jaw is a masterpiece and in my opinion is one of the best dog traps I have ever used.
Next is the 550 with a cast Jaw which is still very suitable for dogs and then comes the 450 which is more than suitable for fox and lighter desert dingo's
The beauty of any of the above traps is that the can be used straight out of the box,and all are centre swiveled
The 650 is also available with rubber jaw pads.
Give me a call.

As Ed suggests, the nature of his request will invariably make some trappers nervous, wondering where these photos might end up.

Closeups of uninjured feet held in various types of traps are a fairly benign item. All he is trying to do at this point is to show the size of the trap relative to the size of a wolf's foot.

That said, I will vouch for Ed and urge you to help him out with your photos. He has assured me that any photos will not be used for anything except his presentation and never on anyone else's computer.

Pete

Good Morning All,
Thanks Pete for for your support it has resulted in my being sent a number of great photos! Many thanks to Guloboy and Tod for your assistance. My greatest concern hear is that we will be forced to use padded jawed traps! So far two states NSW and Victoria mandate the use of padded traps. NSW requires pads but no size restriction! Victoria has limited the size to allow the use of Jake traps and smaller! I know of trappers in NSW using the Braun for dingoes !!

Thanks again to all who have assisted!

Regards,
Ed
