Haven't done any cat trapping myself, but have heard a lot of guys like the #3 double long spring on long chain with drag.

books or videos on cat trapping, traps can range from 1.75 ,#2, #3 coil springs and #2, #3 dls, with 3's being the most popular, cat urine, a good bait or lure, there are some real good baits and lures out there, check out the archives here. if you stake i would double stake your traps un less you are in extremely hard ground, 18" to 24" rebar stakes or some use 15 to 18" disposable stakes. also dont rule out cage traps too

dont forget eye appeal for cats also on the traps I like a #3 size trap but that is for the larger kill area on the trap a flashy dirt hole set is hard to beat I use purrfect on the backing then some with some type of urine (iv had my best sucess with grey fox mixed with grey fox gland lure) and a castor type of bait down the dirt hole

Welcome to trapperman. You will find some great advice on this site. I would read all that you can in the archives it will help you out a ton. I noticed you are from Ny so a lot of advice I give you may or may not be applicable to you and your area. I am a Western type trapper because I guess I live in the west. We do things a little different than some but you could get some good ideas from people from all locations. I have and use these things for cat trapping.

Take into account that almost all my cat sets are on top of the ground. I do not bury my cat traps. I use a modified shingle for my pan cover. I also use high blocking and cat gland on the sides of my trap.

1. #4 Bridger DLS. I like to be able to adjust pan tension to about 3-4 lbs.

2. Get some good wooden cat boards they will be worth the cost.

3. Out here I can not drive a stake to save my life so I have 2 options. a.Drags. b.Cable to choke a rock or tree.

4. Get some cat gland from a good source.

5. I would also get some good boots. I do a lot of walking, climbing, hikeing. Seems like the cat's around these parts want to be on the highest points.

6. You said you wanted to run a decent sized cat line next year. Is that January 2010? If it is you had better start scouting now. If it is January 2011 you had better start scouting now. It takes a lot of scouting to run a big line.

I hope this will get you started with some ideas. I use these things but you could use almost any other thing also. Most important use what is most comfortable for you. Your the one that is going to be doing the work. But when you get your first cat you will be hooked for sure.
