i want to try my hand at bait making. i was wondering if anyone has tried nutria meat. could i use it as you would beaver meat. seems like it would be pretty close to the same stuff. should i taint it, hit it with sodium then add a bait solution?

i'm thinking it might work here on canines being theres so many nutria around here, no beaver around this far south but lots and lots of nutria

We have only an occasional nutria here, but I have used the few I have caught skinned, whole carcass in flat sets, or b'cat cubbies. They did ok.
You might want to address this question to KIRK or some of the other La. trappers where they have a lot of nutria.
Later,

I've used nutria meat, it works, but it is not anything like beaver meat, no caster smell.

Yep. That was my grandpa's coyote bait. Not nutria, but any meat he had handy and a smear of castor.

Hey, how was your trip to Oregon?

crazy, no shots but we had a blast, saw lots of animals,. already have the trip planned for next year to the same place.

the mule deer sitings were unbelievable, numbers and sizes. pronhorn too, fields full of the dang things.

bear sign all over the place and we found a dead cougar. the day before we left from there another fellow hunting the same area was charged by a blakie with three cubs. he was taking pictures of her and the cubs from about 50 yards when she decided he shouldn't be there. the fellow was bowhunting and layed his bow down on the ground and dug out his camera. when she heard the camera clicking she went nuts. he just kept taking pictures until he realized it wasn't a false charge, dropped the camera and grabbed the bow and drew. he let loose an arrow when she was five feet away and hit her square in the chest, she veird right and ran down a ravine. fellow gathered his things and high tailed it out of there straight to the wildlife and fisheries building where we ran into him. men were loading up guns to return to the place to look for the bear and cubs. two bowhunt bears ( beside the one with cubs) and two bowhunt cougars taken in the district while we were there. no bigfoot sightings but plenty of stories. a little nervy when your in the woods as black as coal (can't see your hand in front your face) knowing theres been a few bigfoots running around

Glad you had a good time. Too bad about the bear, though.

I've always wanted to go to Louisiana again, this time to have time to fish and eat some real cajun food. Maybe we better work out a trade!

Steens Mountain, Bud. God was in a good mood when he created Steens Mountain! I'm from a little fork in the road a few miles east of Burns, but now I live in the vegetarian, PETA, gun control, Birkenstock wearing capitol of Oregon, not counting Eugene. Sadly, I live in Corvallis.
