Here is a picture of the bear my son killed today, this bear was starving and had porkypine quills all over its head. The 375 ruger worked well!

Nice going, were you hunting one or you just came across it? I hate it when there on my line.

takotna no we were not hunting I saw it from the road and since it was right in a subdivision and starving we decided he should shoot it before it caused anyone grief, so we ended up tracking it for about 500 yards thru fresh snow and got within 75 yards without the bear knowing we were there.

Yukon,

Very nice! I would love to see one out on the line this late in the year! Glad you put him out of his misery before he made trouble.

Y254, noticed you stated 375 Ruger, not HH. Congrats to your son on the bear.
Do you mind elaborateing on the new rifle: weight, relative cost compared to the 375 HH, as the 375 Ruger is on a standard action.......the cost should have been less then the comparable 375 HH. Performance, recoil, etc.
Have you shot a 375HH so your able to compare the 2?
Thanks.

bristleback funny you should ask about the ruger375... yes i have shot the old hh round, recoil is simular with the ruger a bit more but it is a lighter rifle than most 375 hhs. I shoot left hand and a week ago found a ruger 375 in left hand, I contemplated trading my TC 243 and my tikka 338 federal for it, but didnt for two reasons the first is the recoil, the secound is the cost of reloading. I think the ruger 375 is a great round and outstanding rifle, I just dont need that much power and know I would develop a flinch with it, so I traded the TC for part payment to have the shop re barrel my 77 ruger to 35 whelen. As to the cost the ruger 375 i was looking at was 1200 bucks and they had a ruger#1 375 HH for the same price. If i was getting a 375 it would be the ruger though, as all the ones I heard or seen will really shoot. Hope this helps.

Not meaning to argue, but one major reason the 375 Ruger was brought to market was to be able to offer a 375 in a standard action, thus keeping the cost down = lower retail for the consumer vs the mag action of the traditional 375 HH.

Be interesting to know a side by side comparison, retail price wise.
Yes, the 375 Ruger is supposed to be faster.

Interesting ,I've shot the 375 H&H and the 375 Ruger and yes the ruger boots like a mule but I put it down to the rifles weight and stock design.
I own a Husqvana in 375 Chatfield Taylor, ballistics are near identical to the H&H with less recoil and less powder used.
My choice for the last 10 years has been the Husky on buffalo.

I have never seen a Ruger in any medium to large caliber that wasn't absolutely miserable to shoot. I hate the guns. But that's just me.

Fall bears that are on berries and NOT fish are pretty good.

Fish eating bears make excellant wolf bait. The late Ben Hopson Jr told me one time that tainted grizzly fat was the absolute best wolf bait that he ever tried. One time when he couldn't find any at Anaktuvuk Pass, he had me mail him some!

If there grizz from up north and haven't been eating to much rotten walrus or whale, I understand some people go for it. If there Brown Bear (same as grizz just geographically different) from the Southern or South Central part of the state and/or the coast, we usually make sausage or burger out of them and then just send them down to Texas for yall to enjoy. If you cook it real slow in a crock pot for a couple days, you can enjoy the fine aroma even more. sick

Sorry Ed, I just couldn't resist. whistle

LOL !!

Actually I have eaten some soup made from grizzly paws. It wasn't too bad but was pretty rich. It's strange to look in the pot while it's cooking and see hands floating in there.

Sorry for bumping an old topic, but I've been looking at getting myself a left handed .375 Ruger African. I noticed in this thread that folks have seen the Ruger for about 1300 dollars, but I have been able to find several sites that offer the Ruger for about 800 dollars new, so it's markedly cheaper than an H&H. Of course, being a lefty, it's very appealing to me. Finding a left-handed cannon for anything less than a small fortune is difficult at best. smile

How does Grizz compare to Black Bear in taste? We realy enjoy black bear, the roast is to die for (as good as lamb) and jared is also great.
