Can you prevent you trap bed from freezing by just putting salt that you would use on your driveway in the bed and mixed with the dirt? Will the K9s smell the salt??

If the salt is treated with chemicals, i wouldnt use it. I use regular non-iodized table salt, but it get a little expnensive towards the end of the season

Calcium chloride. Hate to use it but if a trap won't fire it will not catch anything.Next year waxed dirt for me.

Not sure if anyone else has thought of this, but if you don't wax your trapping stakes or earth anchors you could possibly have a failure from the corrosive affects of the salt or calcium cloride. It might take a while to happen, but eventually it would. Just makes sense to wax all your hardware. Just my 2 cents. Worm

What about the liquid anti freeze that some trapping companys sell? I just started using it as others do in this area.

I just watched a dvd where the trapper said the liquid stuff only works down to about 17 degrees.

I must be missing your point about failure if you do not wax, (or treat) your trapping stakes. I am thinking of re-bar, are you talking about another stake?

thanks

I'm mainly talking about cable stakes, but the same applies to rebar. Wouldn't you rather have nice solid traps stakes instead rusty scale covered stakes? Only takes a few minutes to dip them in wax to give them a little protection.

i good older friend of mine who no longer traps said if u use calcium chloride to make sure it is waxed good because it will in time eat the chain in too and severly rust the trap. Good dry dirt is always a good starter and layer with chloride. I dont trap dry land unless 3 or 4 traps count in a years time just not very good at it.
