Newspaper works great. So will paper towels, or anything else that will soak up some of the extra blood and grease. I happen to have a couple of 55 gallon drums full of the old red shop towels, and that's what I use for just about everything.

Put a golf ball under the fur side of the pelt after you strip the tail. Take a 3/8" cotton rope and tie a noose in it and put around the golf ball on the flesh side. Cinch it down and put another loop for your foot on the other end of the rope. Put your foot in the loop and push down with your leg muscles. It's the way my friends do it with their coon and have good results. I use a skinning machine myself!

save yourself and build a cheap skinning rig with a boat trailer winch or electic winch if you have the cash.

I use old wash cloths. When they get too nasty, I rinse them out in a bucket of hot soapy water and hang them in the shed to dry and use again.

The rope method mentioned above is what I use less the golf ball. You can pull a lot harder using your leg then you arms. This leaves you hands free to cut when needed.
There was a post a bit back on a really neat machine.
The rope is cheaper and portable.

I have used the white cotton "liner" gloves, and they work well. Can usually pick them up for under a buck a pair. I only use them if I have a bunch of coon to do and my hands are worn to a frazzle.

I agree with the skinning machine but even then a cheap pair of cotton gloves over your latex gloves REALLY helps out.

You guys have old socks. We keep a bag that we throw our old holy socks in. I have carpel tunnel in my wrist and cant grasp real well, but if I grap a sock and wrap on the hide I get an excellent grip and can pretty much pull a coon to his head. Much faster for me to pull one off. I seen the tail method before, but we skinn in the basement in very small area. My washer and dryer are less than 18 inches behind me so if i pull a tail off or slip very much I am going to end up inside the dryer. Socks also work great for opposums. You know how the external juggler vein is so close and easily "pop" on them. No probelm with the sock. They just get a neck tie sock and on I go..... Hope this helps.

I believe MHoward came up with the idea of catfish pliers. I started using them this year and they work great. Cabela's catalog has them.
